So there are tons of topics about short shifters and doc i's gearswitcher, but i cant seem to find another person with the same problem...

im at last step of the install... all i have to do is pound that new washer in where the old washer used to be (the one where I dremeled out).

however, the washer that was given seems way too small...but i tried anyways. I cant seem to get it in! i tried almost all methods...and now the washer is bent and so ugly that its probably better if i buy a new washer...

can someone give me advice?

can i just leave the washer out and superglue that rod there?

 

I know that some have run without the washer. You can get another one at Ace True Value or a similar hardware store for way less than a buck. An easy way to put it on is to use a socket that is the right size (I think I used a 12mm if I remember correctly.. but it has been a while) to sit against the washer and tap it with a hammer. One good whack and it should pop right on.

And you could have just popped the old one off with two screwdrivers if you do it right

ahh okay, i'll WALK out there tomorrow morning before work...hopefully i can get it all fixed in time. heheh luckily its not too far away...

what size washer is it exactly? don't worry if no one knows...ill just get one a ltitle bit bigger than the one i screwed up. =)

I honestly cant remember. I just took the broken one I pried off with me and found one the same size. The one Doc sends is the right one. It should take force to put on so it stays put. So you can get the same size with no issue.

 

Easy..... take a socket that is smaller than the washer but has a bigger opening than the bolt. push the washer against the bolt, than the socket w/ the open end towards the bolt, than hit it w/ a hammer.

i hate that freakin washer and the lid to remove the shifter from the seat. no one should subject anyone to that cruelty

 

Its not hard at all if you do it right Very little effort is needed. Two prying tools (one small, one larger) is the key on the washer. It will come off in seconds that way.

The cap just takes 2 prying tools to make it easier.

 

3/8" push retainer for unthreaded shafts. Sometimes called a spline lock washer. You can generally find them at ACE/True Value stores that have a decent Serv-A-Lite hardware section.

And as was mentioned before, it's not a critical part anyway-- I drove for nearly a year without that washer.
