Scion Reveals FR-S GP Car at Chicago Auto Show

By -

In hindsight, this is probably something that we should’ve seen coming had we been paying any attention. Toyota has decided to swap out the TC for the FR-S in their annual pro/celebrity race. The interesting part isn’t so much that they swapped the cars out, but the cars themselves.

Performance wise, they’ve equipped the FR-Ss with a new, TRD approved airbox and a TRD exhuast. Not huge power adders at all, but they should serve to make the FR-S a little bit more sporty. Other changes include TRD coil overs, 18″ wheels, and Bridgestone Potenza RE11 tires. It is a race car, so the more grip it’s got, the better. Each car is also fitted with a full cage and five point harness. They’ve also have fire extinguishers, a kill switch and window net for added safety.

In honesty, I feel like Scion should just release this car as a track day special. They should make it like the stripped out RC model they’re selling Japan, but with all the track safety stuff included. I think the tuners/drifters/customizers/racers would love something like that. Who knows? Maybe they’d be able to kick off a spec FR-S series. Just because it doesn’t say “Miata” on the back doesn’t mean they shouldn’t follow in Mazda’s footsteps with this.
