Rumormill: Toyota Resurrecting Supra on FR-S Platform?

I should know better than to bring up rumors concerning the Supra, but at least this one sounds like it holds some water. Toyota and BMW have confirmed that they’re working together on a new sports car platform. BMW will use the layout for their next generation Z4 Coupe. Toyota, on the other hand, would presumably use it for some variant of a next generation Supra. Toyota hasn’t confirmed whether or not that’s their plan, nor have they detailed the specs of the upcoming platform.

Considering the popularity of Toyota’s latest sport car platform, it’s pretty clear that the platfrom will be some variant of the FR-S chassis. More than likely, it’ll be getting a stretch to make it more like a GT. It’ll also need that space to package the hybrid drive train, if MotorTrend is correct. They say it’ll pack a 400hp 2.5 liter turbocharged drive train. That’s going to be a fun car anyway to slice it.

Even though this all seems pretty set in stone, I’m always hesitant when it comes to rumors about the Supra. The Mark IV Supras went riding off into the sunset as legendary. They, along with Nissan’s Skyline, were some of the first imports out there to make 1000hp in a street car cool. Admittedly, that was probably due in large part to the Fast and Furious films, but whatever. The fact is that the Supra is still incredibly popular, so these rumors tend to surface again and again. This time though… I think they’re serious. Toyota’s begun making cars that are fun to drive again with Scion. Even Lexus has gotten significantly more interesting over the past year. Right now would be a perfect time to bring back their halo car.
