What would you like to know specifically, Joe?

Dry conditions autocrossing Kumho V710's I'm 36-40 all the way around.

Dry conditions at Putnam Park on the Avons I ended up about the same 36-38.

It's been a while since I've been on my Hoosier A6s, but if I remember right I was running a little more up front to keep from killing the out side shoulder of the tire.

Wet conditions at Putnam, with my rain/OEM tires , I ended up with 32-34 up front and 28 in the rear to keep the back end in check. Still working on my rain settings.

Keep in mind I've got better than stock camber and stiffer sways so I am running a little lower pressure than what I was running when stock.

Obviously different setups are probably require different tire pressures, but these might get somebody started.

Dan, congrats on the National Championship. So what pressures are you running?

Thanks, Jonathan. We typically see 39-41 F and 37-39 R. As a "general" rule of thumb, we'll start around 26 F/ 28 R in the morning. Depending on the day, we'll bleed down from there. Remember though, sometimes when you start HIGHER there is less delta, so hot pressures can actually be LOWER that way. Also, if you're running a full-tread R-Comp, pressures and temps will go sky high, so you have to take that into account as well.

So the 39-41F / 37-39R are your hot pressures and the 26F / 28R are cold?

Dan brings up something else. For track days and road racing you've got to set your cold pressures with the effects of temperature/pressure gain in mind, since you won't be checking them after every lap. If you are autocrossing you have more opportunities to regulate you pressures after every run so you can start closer to the ideal pressures.

BTW Dan, did Lee Grimes finally get you hooked up with some Konis? If so, could you tell me what dumpster you threw those crappy Motons in?

The "crappy" Motons are doing just fine on the racecar, thank you! =)

I have less experience with tire pressures, though I know some of the physics behind it which I guess puts my in the right direction.

On a street compound 275 series tire, do you adjust pressures by track type?

I've left my car at 35psi front and rear, given it's 50/50 weight distribution. The tracks I've raced were more technical with turns, but light on the brakes. It worked fairly well but my front was over dampened on the first few sessions. When I hit some imperfections/bumps on the track while turning, the car would understeer. I lowered the dampening by about 6-8 clicks and it helped keep the car more planted. I decreased my lap time by a little bit.

Over a 15-20 minute session, do you think I should try something different with the pressures on the RX-8?

Tires have been the last thing I've really dug into, which I now know is a fairly crucial part.

Thanks in advance.

Joe, needs for racing and for just tracking the car are different. For a short session of lapping, I'll need to know which tires you are running...

Short sessions I've been running Nitto Invo's. 245/40/18 F 275/35/18 R. They have a pretty soft sidewall so I'm eventually looking to upgrade.

I guess I'll just wait until I decide what tire I actually want to run before I focus on pressures. I've been pretty busy lately so the build has been delayed quite a bit.

Don't you mean DOT 5? I was under the impression DOT 5.1 works well with ABS systems, because of it's low viscosity.

I starting to prep/get parts to start road racing soon. As far as tire choice, would it be alright to run r-comps, or would you recommend something more like an Azenis tire to learn the car?

The Azenis or other street tire will be a far better tire to learn on. There will be more feedback and it won't cover up mistakes nearly as much.

And for that I'd recommend Enkei RPF-1s, light, tough, and affordable. It's what's on our racecar.

How much did they run you though? Where are you located??

But really SSRs and RPF1s were the two I am between when the time comes.

thanks guys!

O and two more questions??
Any of you guys using any racing apparel, like gloves or shoes? Also Dan are you going to be racing at all in FL?? I would love to at least watch you guys live....

I will send you a PM about the wheels, don't want to clutter up this thread.

Right now, I am not racing , just getting on-track instruction (HPDE's with NASA) so I don't have to wear a suit or anything. As far as gloves and shoes, I don't wear any "proper" racing gear, just an old pair of Pumas (like http://a712.g.akamai.net/7/712/225/v...30109105_z.jpg .)

Do gloves make a whole lot of difference, even with a stock steering wheel? Or do people mostly wear them b/c they have to in racing (fireproof) ??

Doesn't look like we'll be racing in FL this year...closest will probably be Ohio. As for gloves and shoes, you might like using them. We use G-Force gear. I love the reverse seam pro gloves...highly recommended. They also make racing boots. If you're looking for a light duty shoe you can wear at home too, take a look at the Speedcat by Puma, or any of the Piloti shoes.
