Default Mods Express HID review

Finally got around to finish the install, once all the needed things arrived. The lights look great, but there are somethings that bring the setup down a bit.

Negatives:
1- The bottom section of the ballast, are really thin metal. Doesnt seem that safe to me but with it injected, I guess it could be ok.
2- You need the wiring harness, NO MATTER WHAT!!! Something that they insisted that I dont need. (seems odd that without it, it never turned on the ballasts, but the minute that the harness was installed they lit up immediately)
3- The customer help was a bit of a joke. No offense to the guys, but seriously... I was told that I should switch the plug so that the positive and negative connections connected... a HUGE NO NO in electrical basics!

Positives:
1- the harness was pretty legit, good wires, connections, relay, and a fuse.
2- easy install?

Here is a complilation of messages back and forth during the service and install. A part of it references a video and pictures.

Pictures (of harness and connections)

This first image is the one that I was told that I should flip the connection, so positive led to negative.

onto the emails:
ME:

With the wait, i expected it to be all together, but it seems as if you forgot a few important things. One is zip ties, which is shown on the instructions as being included. Obviously not a big deal.

The second are the connections that go to the battery. With every wire harness for any other kit i see those are included... excluding yours. After an attempted install, its obvious that not every aspect is here. Neither bulb lit up, flickered, or anything.

MODS:

Hello,

Zip ties are not included because it is recommended that you ground the ballast with screws and brackets. Zip ties usually turn old about half a year and end up breaking, then our company gets blamed on for providing "poor quality zip ties". Regardless if there poor or not the proper way of installing is to ground them.

Wiring harness is not included unless requested. Our ballasts are already double reinforced to be able to handle the extra surge of power needed to start the ballasts but if you wish I can send you a wiring harness.

If the kit does not start up, please double check all wiring, make sure the positive and negative spades are in the right slot and etc. Play around with them until it works. We haven't had a kit not work in years. Remember one simple miswire will stop the ballast from firing up.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks & Regards,
Robert

I attempted to install them multiple times. Unplugged, replugged, at least four times with different combinations of bulbs and ballasts. They never worked no matter what.

MODS:

Hello,

Please send the kit back, I will install it on one of our sponsor cars. If it does work we will send it back and I will guide you step by step on the installation. Please know that we will have to charge you a $9.00 fee to ship it back if the kit does work. So please do make sure it does not work, we have seen local customers bring in there cars telling us our kits are not working when they missed something really simple like the ballast to the battery harness wasn't plugged or the positive and negative spades were reveresed and so forth.

Thanks & Regards,
Robert

ME:

Ballast to the battery harness? So you mean the wire that goes to the original headlight plug on the factory harness.

I will also be charged the shipping back down to you guys as well.

MODS:

Hello,
Correct the ballast has 2 split plugs and 1 socket. The 2 split plugs should connect to the bulbs 2 split plugs. The 1 socket should connect with the other plug thats dangling off the bulb with the other end with 2 loose skinny connectors that are suppose to connect to the stock harness.

If the kit really does not work we will issue you a check for your shipping fees and you will not be charged for the new kit shipping.

Thanks & Regards,
Robert

So the holding clip goes over the large nub on the inside of the ballast plug. Although the nub on the outside is identical to others on different plugs.

MODS:

Hello,

In the video at :07 seconds, swap the plug around 180 and plug it back into the ballast.

Thanks & Regards,
Robert

(the video that was supplied was going over each connection, this reversal would have had the negative going to the positive wire)

ME:

So I followed your directions on flipping the ballast plug 180 degrees and nothing.

This is a simple install, and basic knowledge tells you that going against positives and negatives it will not work, although you instructed me to do so. The black should be going to the negative side which is the top side of the ballast, and not the reverse like you instructed me to do.

I would like the wiring harness to get the battery directly involved to help with the power spike and initial start up.

MODS:

Hello,

I will go ahead and send you the wiring harness. If it still does not work please send it back to us and we will send you a brand new kit.

Thanks & Regards,
Robert

ME:

when can i expect the harness that is needed to connect to the battery, just like with every other HID kit?

MODS:

Hello,

I am a bit confused. I know your requesting the wire harness that connects directly to the battery, but the kit itself will power itself when you connect the 2 end plugs of the bulb to the oem stock harness of your car it should have the power to power up your hid kit already. The wire harness is to simply protect yourself from power surges that the ballast can not handle such as cheap Ebay kits with non reinforced ballasts.

Thanks & regards,
Robert

ME:

But the hid could should connect to the battery correct? How else would it get the spike it needs for initial start up? And why does every other kit have that connection, including phillips and high end HID kits?!?! Buts yours doesnt?

Conclusion
Not that bad of a setup, after also seeing a friend with mobilehid. I would vote go talk to cliffud (mobilehid) first for your HID needs. MobileHID kit does not give you the option of a harness or not, he doesnt even suggest not using one for a few reasons (one it wont turn on duh!, and two horrible for your car and the setup).

Just thought I'd share some better pics of the modexpress kit just in case anyone else is interested...

The metal cover on the back is REALLY REALLY REALLY thin... no wire harness shipped with mine...
