does this kit require power and ground? i dont think my kit that i have now needed it - i installed it years ago when i first got the car so i dont remember ....

You have the option of running a power and ground (aka relay harness) with the kit. Most people do it as you run the chance of burning out your OEM harness. Some people run it, others don't. Some of had no problems what so ever with running no relay harness but then some have had problems, it is a hit or miss partner.
