Happy to be a part of the forum. I joined because I recently purchased a "new to me" 2006 tC. I've always liked the looks of these cars
and happened upon this one. It has very high mileage, 266k, but it's in such great condition I decided to pick it up and breathe new life into it.
I just got it towed home yesterday. I'm the third owner and the previous two owners took very good care of it. It is a 5 speed, another reason I wanted it because I currently don't have one.
I picked it up for a couple hundred bucks because it stopped starting two weeks ago and threw a P0012 Code the week before. So I am going to dig into it and see what needs to be replaced.
The 2AF-ZE engine is original to the car. I'm going to tear into it and see what I am working with after 266k miles. I'm keeping fingers crossed that the head bolts haven't stripped out in the block. If not I'll rebuild this block with ARP studs. Hopefully the crankshaft isn't worn too badly
and I'll be able to turn it and clean the journals up with fresh oversize bearings. I'll be upgrading the rods, rod bolts, pistons, wrist pins, etc. with aftermarket parts. Not looking to build a race motor, but if I'm going to rebuild it then I'm going to put back what I want.
Same with the head, as long as there is no warping, cracks, etc. then I will rebuild it too. New valve train and may try to find a nice set of factory cams. I plan to run a piggyback tuner like the AEM so that I can tune it after the rebuild. I'll just have to see where it takes me I suppose.
Engine is pretty clean at first glance.
A little rust here and there on brackets and fasteners. Nothing that won't clean up or is easily replaced. I've went through several cars like this before. An SRT4, Focus ZX3, 95 Civic
and a 97 Accord which I still own. The Accord is now my oldest daughter's ride. Picked it up cheap, took my time and went through everything until it was a reliable daily driver.
My younger daughter will likely inherit this one. I really like the car so maybe we can share it, lol... I'll try to post helpful info and pics as I dig through it.
Hopefully contribute as well as learn about these cars, I really like this one I can't wait to get it moving again.
Welcome, Toolmaker! Make sure to browse the forum for more info about your car and feel free to post any specific questions you have about your vehicle in the tech sections.
Well it's been about 8 months since I last posted. Life, work and all that kind of delayed my rebuild. But anyway, after much deliberation I decided to buy a JDM engine to get my tC rolling again. I ordered an engine from Ichiban JDM in Buena Vista, CA. Truck dropped it yesterday, weather is nasty today here in WV but I managed to get the shrink wrap pulled and look it over:
Looks decent so far. I ordered a new gasket kit because I want to pull the valve cover, oil pan, etc to look everything over before I install it. After seeing the damage caused by the balance shafts I have to get a look and attempt to check all I can.
Plus I'm going to bead blast and paint a lot of things going back in. This car has some typical Ohio rust beginning to form on a few of the mounts, brackets, etc. So I have to get the front suspension/engine bay cleaned up first. Then I'm going to paint the assembled block/head red and paint the valve cover black. I know the red may seem like a weird choice but I will be able to spot leaks much easier that way.
Anyway, I'm back after my hiatus. I'll try to document all I can as the engine goes in. Should be more to come this week...
ETA: The old engine block/head and valvetrain are all cleaned up and ready for the turbo build. They'll be painted the same color as this new engine. I have the parts for my turbo manifold at work. I have to finish fitting and run final welds. I need to make a few adjustments before I weld it up, it's tacked at the moment. My next purchase is a new factory crankshaft from Toyota for the turbo build.
So the turbo build lives, it's just moving slow... I have an Audi A6 Quattro and an 03 F150 that I'm currently working on restoring too. But it's the tC's turn for some love. I'm also going to fabricate an engine hoist stand to transplant the new 2AZ into my tC. I'll throw some pics of it up when I get it built. It's going to have a trolley spanning a small H Beam with a 1 ton chain hoist attached. I should be able to pick the engine up to the proper height and glide it over the engine bay with one hand, hopefully.
