Default Air vent Question???

I noticed the other day when i put my climate controls on recirculate or outside vent ... and put the **** on floor vents only the outside two dash air vents still blow.

Is any one tryed this and got similar results, if this is normal this is the first time i have heard of a car blowing air from the dash and floor when only the floor is selected.

I noticed that too. If you look in the little manual thing it shows where air comes out on which settings.

You can just spin the outer vents closed and they won't blow. My last few Toyotas had an adjustable slider on them, but they always broke or wouldn't hold one position... Guess they just got rid of them altogether.

I noticed that when I move the switch to recirculate, there is NO noticeable change in force with the air coming through the vents. In every other car I've driven, when you switch to recirculate, you can feel and hear a difference in the force of the air coming through.

This past Monday, I took my car in to the dealer so they could finally install the sway bars I was supposed to have when I picked up my xB back in February. Anyhow, I asked them to check the recirculate feature to see if it was working properly because I told them it didn't seem to be. Well, when I picked up the vehicle--after the service guys had already left for the day--they said that they couldn't find a problem and that if I still thought it wasn't working that I should come back when the service guys are there and test it out with them.

I hate those answers, but I understand why they do that. If they don't hear a buzz when you tell them there's one, how are they to know what to fix.

Anyhow, last night, I decided to take off the consule to take a look and see if I could find out why the recirculation wasn't working. Well, I found out that there was this little metal prong, which was supposed to push against a very tiny button on a small "transistor" thing when you move the switch to the recirculate position, but it was bent and coming off the "transistor."

Just as a test, I turned the car on and used the end of flat screwdriver to push in this tiny button. Voila! You could hear and feel the air come through much more forcefully. Then, I let go of the button and you could hear and feel the air subside with the same sound and force as I've always heard it in my car. This suggests to me that the recirculate feature hasn't been working at all and the service guys must not have even checked.

I made an appointment to take my car back next Monday but I'm not sure whether they will charge me to fix it now that I've opened the consule and seen this broken metal prong. Perhaps they will say I broke it and charge me to fix it.

If anyone else has had a similar problem with their recirculation feature not working or not sounding or feeling noticeably different when you turn on the air and turn the switch from pulling in air from the outside to recirculating, let me know. Maybe this is a more common problem than we think?

I havent had any problems like that on my 04 xB, but I have only had it for 2 weeks now. I will keep that in mind though and see if develops the problem with the metal prong thingy. I certainly hope it doesnt, but things like that happen sometimes.

Hey congrats on your xB! I saw the pics on your profile. Awesome wheels! What other mods have you got in store? I have pics of mine in my profile as well.

I see you're in NH...I'm just down the block ;) in Waltham, Mass. I'm sure you've heard from others that this car is great in the snow. I got mine in February and drove through two snowstorms without any worries. I don't have experience with a 4x4 to compare it to, though, but I was impressed. I may look into getting dedicated winter tires as long as I can find a set that aren't too soft or wear out within 10K miles (I do about 26K miles per year).

Update on the metal prong thingy... the service guy at the dealership said he found the problem with it (coming off and not being able to click the recirculate circuit button when pushed into that position) so he's going to order a new assembly (which includes this little circute) and replace the whole piece. Should take 2-4 days to get it and it's all covered. phew!

Actually I am in North Carolina. The NH is short for Night Hawk. Night Hawk Grafx is the name I use for my freelance graphic design projects.

I updated the pics on my profile here. THe ones you saw were taken with my laptops webcam in my garage and were just temporary. I have real pics now taken with a decent camera, and have a whole bunch more here if your interested. http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/n63...bum?.dir=/a88f

Although I am glad you said the car handles well in snow because I got family scattered all around the Boston area. And we drive up there several times a year.

As for more mods, I might get a spoiler and some interior gadgets. I also might get that gigantic sunroof thing too. I probably wont be doing any engine mods as those can sometimes lead to major problems down the road.
