Break in mileage what should I expect
Today is the day @ 4:00 pm EST I will go to Fitzgerald Toyota/Scion to pick up my new BOP scion xB. This is my first brand new car I have owned that has 0 miles on it.
Recently I helped my father break in his hybrid prius. For the first thousand miles it only go 38-42 miles per gallon when it was supposed to get 50 we took it back and the dealer said it was normal on all cars as a break in period for it too get bad gas mileage and it would get better later , which it did.
So enough rambling, should I expect horrible gas mileage when I first pickup the xB?
Also the free mods posted so far are cool I am a low budget college student and need these cheap mods so keep them coming

I only noticed a couple mpg difference between the first several tanks and what I get today 1t 15K.
I sure you are getting more than 42mpg on that Prius now!! Unfortunately I know folks who don't get even that and they are VERY mad.

My worst so far out of 5 fills was 31 mpg... the best was 37 mpg. 31 was driving it with harder take-offs and higher highway speeds, 37 was taking it easy and keeping my highway speeds to less than 70 mph.
Congrats on the box!
My mileage hasn't been that great but I drive it hard.
At 1500 miles my last tank city driving was 23mpg.
A trip Houston to Austin when the car was new at 70 + 80 mph got me 28 per gallon, the return @80+90mph got me 26.5.
I heard they pick up mileage as you get more miles on them.
Either way the box is a blast to drive, not powerful, just fun!

My car steadily gets 29-31 (100% city driving, less than 50MPH). I now have almost 11K miles. The very fews times a year I leave town- I get 36-38 MPG.
To answer your question- My mileage has stayed the same since day one!

I got about 34 even while driving 1600 miles about 500 miles into my break in period. the next time I did the same thing, I got the same mileage.
By the way, I wouldn't really suggest driving 1600 miles right after you bought your car, at highway speeds, all day, straight, no chaser. It's probably not a good idea. I like to live life on the wild side

With 10,000 miles on my CamoBox - auto, I am consistently getting 38+mpg when I can get bye without a/c. However, with the hot-humid days we've been having in the NorthEast I'm getting more like 35.5 mpg. The a/c really robs power from that little powerplant. This is new to me. The Taurus/Sables did not mind blowing cold.
I've had my box for 'bout 3 weeks now, and I just filled up for the second time. The first tank got 30.23 MPG and the second tank got 29.28 MPG. From what I can gather from the forums, mileage will hover around the 30 mark for a few thousand miles the improve a bit as the engine frees up.
yeah i know, im just curious if everyone just throws in 87-89 octane or higher? low octane should be fine for the box right?
Im hopefully getting my xB today and I have to make a trip to syracuse this friday and then on to montreal on saturday then back to virginia on sunday. is that a bad idea to make a road trip right when i get it? I want to make sure I break it in right so I dont have problems later. the trip to 'cuse is about 6 hrs for me and then another 5 to montreal. Im sure I will be hitting tons of traffic on friday anyways so I wont be going the same speed for too long. but as long as I keep changing my speed when on the open road I should be OK right?

Changing your speed should help. I'd also recommend stopping frequently (every hour)
Are you getting a 5 speed or auto? I'd recommend shifting between the two highest gears (in an auto, the O/D button is just below the big button on the shifter) running it at 4k or so will help the break-in process, as will the shifting to get on and off the interstate.
