Don't you think you would save more money doing it yourself? It's treadful to imagine some guy I don't know drying my car with a dirt-soiled regular cotton cloth that has already been used numerous times on other cars and not to mention running my car through an automated machine with moving metal parts all around.
^^^ LOL - so true dude. they use nasty dirty rags... I duno but I guess I just don't care that much for my box. lol. I use it maybe twice a week ONLY (it's 19 months old, and i have a little over 16k miles on it..)
You make a good point tho - i should be washing it myself. and, ps, washing your car yourself is smart - it's not you being cheap. i make my own starbucks coffee - not because i'm cheap - it's the smart thing to do! =]
since my car is your typical grocery getter (sorry boxy, i had to call you that) , i worry more about maintaining it mechanically than it's physical appearance.
but i should give it a good wash myself one day... i wana wax it too rather than taking it to someone who'll charge me thru the roof. heh

I always hand wash my car it just looks better, back when I was driving my Corrola, sometimes when I went to the car wash the car would look no better than it did coming in. Honestly handwashing it is the best, you get to work outside get some air I'd like to believe that is good for you :]
The box? Hose it off every now and then. I use it to work and commute, so not much need for looks.
My other car I wash by hand with all the right stuff, and then wax it with turtle wax ice paste. I let the paste dry a little and then use the quick detailer to buff it out. Extremely deep shine that lasts a long time.

I like to wash and wax my car because I don't trust the uh.. "locals" around my area to do a good job at the local car washes. Besides, its always fun to wash the car and see guys slow down just to watch a girl wash her car, or other things.
I tend to get the vehicle washed at an auto spa that i've been going to for the past 9 years or so, they do good work. There is a place in Totowa NJ that is a full detail by hand that costs roughly 120+ which I want to goto but never do since there are a line of cars even before the place opens and its packed till closing, like literally 100+ cars on their lot all getting full details and they look AMAZING.
Maybe 1-2 times a year I do a 3 step Meguires(did it on my impala for 7 years), Paint Cleaner if needed(leaf stains etc), a nice polish then carnuba wax. Takes me roughly 3-4 hours and I do love it when I do it, but I haven't been up on it with the Scion since my Ankle/Right Foot has been in pain for nearly 7 months due to bone fragments from a previous injury so that up and down kneeling kills me. I want to go to the doctor but I really can't afford to go on a leave of absence, I could use work disability I suppose to get the needed surgery but honestly I'm stubborn and stupid
