Default My first oil change... 3500 mi...?

I read the post "all your motor oil answer" to see when i should go for my first oil change but that didn't quite answer it for me. My dealer wrote 3500 miles for the first oil change and i know scion says 5000 miles. Does anyone know why my dealer wrote 3500 miles for first oil change? Should i just ignore this and wait til 5000? Confused!

There is no direct answer to your question.

If you ask someone "whats a better car company, Honda or hyundai"

Some will say a Honda

Some will say Hyundai

Or some will say XBOX is better than PS2

My point to my analagies is that some will say "ohh you have to change your oil at 500 miles to get those deposits out of your engine"

and some will say dont worry about it.

Ive always changed my oil in my new toyotas every 2500 miles (which is 1/2 of the scion reccomended 5000 mile interval)

That way i stay in track with the scion reccomend services.

Remeber that you only have to perform the scion reccomended service (every 5K) to maintain your warranty!

I have spoken with a few toyota techs here in Phoenix at Avondale Toyota/Scion. All of them have told me the same thing that the oil used in the scions is a synthetic blend made only for these motors that allows for such separated oil change intervals. Some dealers tell you 3000 miles because they were trained to say so and know nothing different. Honda has their own special oil, and well and ford and a few other manufacturers. These oils were made special for these vehicles to run their best in most conditions. Conventional oil begins to breakdown at around 3000 miles, depending on the motor and the driving habits. I know for certain that the oil light on the scion comes on when the sensor notice a change in the oil. That is why sometimes the light will come on earlier than 5000 miles or maybe even longer than 5000. I drive live a granny for full effect, so the light doesn't come on til about 6000 miles. Which isn't going to mess up the warranty because that is what the light is for. Hope this helps.

I thought that oil light went off every 5000 miles thakns to the odometer? Not oil quality?

You can reset it yourself if it comes on because someone forgot to reset it while changing the oil...

Yea, it goes off every 5k, I just hit 10k and it's been going off...or actually I think it might be the "service engine" light...oh well, there is an every 5k warning light I think

if you really want to keep your engine clean and running to its top i would recommend changing your oil every 2500-3000 and run mobile 1 synthetic...91 octane gas is a plus too.

I've already planned out the maintenance interval for my tC when it gets here. Changing the oil at 500 miles, putting Mobil back in it, and changing it every 4000 miles.

You are referring to the "maintenece required" light, and yes, it reminds you to change you oil- BUT it does not monitor your oil!
