I was reading the TSB EG018-06 and it lists: NZ series....
is that the same as the xA engine: 1NZ-FE

My xA was built this summer 06 and the oil cap says
API SL 5W30..... so does my 06 owner's manual printed 02/06.

I'm going with the filler cap.

this is interesting I didn't know that.

I have the 06 right when they just roll out. Am I still suppose to use that 5-20?

You may find this interesting. I have a 2006 xB, bought last October and the CEL came on the other week. The local dealership from which I purchased the vehicle ran the diagnostic and first assumed a malfunctioning variable timing socket. When I brought the car back in after the part arrived, I noticed that this wasn't the repair made as noted on the invoice but rather that they replaced the oil control valve assembly because the valve was sticking and changed out the oil with 5W20 along with a new filter and gasket. The service advisor said that they received the noted service bulletin and this was the reason for it.

I don't know if you're trying to compare the 5w20 in your xB to the change in the tC, but they're totally different engines, so it's not a likely reason for the change in the tC.

I doubt that its possible to plug up an oil filter. Maybe it takes tens of thousands of miles. At its first oil change, at 6500 miles, the oil filter of a neglected xA had nothing in it, according to the first post here, written by a dealer mechanic:

Same here. The TSB says use the oil that's in the manual and on the cap. Why would anyone use anything else??

We appreciate your inquiry regarding engine oil recommendations for your tC. Scion issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #EG018-06 updating engine oil recommendations for particular vehicles. The Scion tC, which is equipped with the 2AZ-FE engine, is now recommended to use ILSAC GF-4 SAE 5W-20 oil, whereas in the Owner's Manual for your vehicle it outlines the use of ILSAC SAE 5W-30 oil.

We apologize, we do not have the ability to provide copies of TSB's. You may contact your local dealer for further assistance or our Material Distribution Center at 800-622-2033.
