I saw an ad on TV (so it must be true ) for some synthetic oil that said if you use their oil you only had to change it every 15k. Would you recommend doing that?

 

Me, personally: no fuggin' way!

Two reasons why I wouldn't:
1. If your box is still under warranty, amd something catastrophic happens to your engine, chances are they're going to request maintenance records. This lets them know that the engine failure was due to a defect, which is covered under warranty, as opposed to owner neglect, which isn't. Your owner's manual states the oil should be changed every 5,000 miles, and that's what the dealership will be looking for if you have a major engine problem.

2. I was raised in a "old pick-em-up truck and muscle car" household. My father refused to go a mile over 3,000 miles before changing oil in his vehicles. And, growing up around that, it's hard to change my ways. So, I have a hard time even stretching it to 5,000 miles. But that's just me.

Amsoil says every 15k miles with an oil sample every couple just to be sure. But i still wouldnt do it. I use Amsoil10w-30 high performance synthetic and change it myself with filter every 5k miles. make sure you log it in your maintenance records for warranty's sake.

 

funny you should ask, I read a consumer reports article a long time ago when synthetics were the new hot thing where they put the theory to test. They used taxi cabs in NYC as the test vehicles. Crown Vics or some such things. 1 car was changed every 3k miles, 1 was changed at 5k and 1 ran on synthetic with changes every 3k I believe. After 100k miles they tore the motors down and saw no discernable difference between the 3 motors.

Now with that said, I lean between 3-5 k on my cars.

 

I am still stuck on the every 3k change. Old habits are hard to break. I know the manual says every 5k but that's just hard for me to do.

 

Too many resources are ready being waisted, change you oil @ 7000 miles even "Click and Clack" are doing it.

 

I change my oil every 4 to 5 thousand miles. I also use castrol. My dad said that synthetic is crap because of were they get the oil.

 

i get an oil change every 4k...or whenever im bored...whichever comes first.

 

i am always bored, if you were me, you would changed oil every 1k.

I change my Mobil 1 every 5k .
BTW, do i have to keep my motor oil and filter receipts for the warranty? since i change them myself?

 

You could keep reciepts but I don't. I keep a maint. log with miles and dates. If that ain't good enough oh well?
Changing over to Mobil 1 and using Toyota filters at 1k and changing them every 5K should guarantee 300K miles from your engine. I'll let ya know in 20 years.

 

Ive always asked jiffy lube to change my oil.... Now, I have decided to change it my self.... How do you change your oil... I mean, where is the oil tank thinggy? can someone show me a pic?

 

um you'll find the oil plug on the bottom of the car, but maybe you should just use jiffy lube

 

Yea, and if he's always used Jiffy, there's a good chance his oil never actually got changed in the first place

 

The only time a 15,000 mile oil should be considered is if the car is operated under lights loads, u solely drive for long periods of time/long distances, and never do the occasional run to the coner store. The only thing I would use is regular synthetic oil n change it every 5,000 miles.
