synthetic oil
Uh, this question came up earlier and I listed five, and linked to maybe a couple of dozen more different ones via a Google search - lemme see if I can find it...

because I'm using K&N, Mobile1, TRD, or Denso oil filters.
Actually I'm testing each filter out, and cutting them open
when I'm done to see what they look like on the inside!
Anyone know where I can get one of those oil filter can openers? Tomas?

I use a full true synthetic, the only true synthetic motor oils are Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple, Mobil 1, also I only use brands of filter made by Champion labs such Amsoil, Mobil 1 etc....GO straight to it and never look back
I have a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 170K miles on it...put synthetic in it the day I got and it's never seen any other type of oil in the last 12 years. The engine has never been touched other than a water pump...valve covers have never been removed. No smoke, no drips, no noises...I'm sold on synthetic!
Is it in my Scion, you bet!

While I'm a synthetic user with my xB (changed at about 3000 miles to a synthetic), long mileage figures without problems can show up on properly cared for normal vehicles that use the more usual motor oils.
As an example, my 1990 Ford Escort had no problem with the engine internals in the 164,000 miles it had before I sold it. That was on regular oil, and Fram filters...
Same for the 182,000 miles I put on my '64 Volvo 122S.
(And yes, I've also had engines essentially 'self destruct' in under 100,000 miles with the same care and type of use...
)
I'm not saying that 'all oils are the same' or that synthetics aren't better for numerous reasons, just that occasional anecdotal instances of high milage with no problems are not solely due to synthetic lubricants...

You can take your own oil in to Toyota service dept and save $$. We do that for our Prius oil changes--I'm sure Scion would accept it the same. That is after you receive your 3 free. My Scion dealer gives the first four, along with 21 point inspection and I think tire rotation. Good for first 20K miles or 2 years. Included with purchase of a Scion in 2005.
