Yea and so does a timing belt going on you too....but the chances of the chain going out are alot less of a chance then and regular belt.....But what is used to keep the chain lubed???? The oil in the engine>>??????

 

Yup... it's all internal so it is lubed by engine oil. In today's modern chain-driven engines, if there's any part of the drive that does need to be look at every so often, it would be the chain tensioner. But even those rarely ever fail anymore, so no need to worry :)

 

all of toyota's 4cyl engines are chains

I was at the scion dealer yesterday asking about the tc, then he's like, you know it has a chain, I was REALLY?!? Then he told me all of them have it. Glad to know toyota is heading in the right direction

 

I wondered about that. Belts are quieter than chains. Saturn used a chain from the beginning and there have always been complaints of engine noise with them. Matrix has also been criticed for having too loud engines. The xB has been sealed better for noise and is quieter than the Matrix. Part of the reason why I chose the xB over the Matrix.

Glad to hear the chains are more reliable. So what happens when they do break? Will they flail around in he engine doing damage?

I have never heard of a chain breaking on a stock motor. I would think that if you run an insane amount of boost, or a high shot of nitrous, supplying an insane amount of torque, that you may risk snapping the chain. I have heard of a chain stretching, in which case the motor will miss, and run/idle rough, but nothing like having a belt break while in route somewhere, and toasting the whole engine. That i HAVE heard of happening, a lot more in recent years with more compacts running belts instead of chains.
