Default tranny problems anyone?

It all started out great. The dealer delivered my dark blue tC 5spd almost two weeks early. Beautiful car, great ride, but after about 1100 miles, the honeymoon was over. The tranny won't stay in 3rd gear at all, I have to hold it in place and 4th and 5th are really "crunchy" now. Has anyone else had this problem? I expected the tranny to be good since it's from the Camry. I guess we'll see what the dealer says...

I am a toyota/scion salesman (and im still fairly new to these boards) and i havent heard anything about this yet. The way i see it, theres two possibilities (and im not a mechanic)

#1 you got a bad tranny from the start

#2 you driven your tc pretty hard maybe stripping some of the teeth on the gears

i would suggest taking it into service asap to see if it'll be covered under warranty

also did you add a short shift or the TRD Clutch?

well, the dealer called today and said that the syncro (sp?) is bad and they are going to give me a new tranny. It's comming from Canada though, and I'll probably have to wait another week to get the car back. Now I'm stuck driving a crappy loner corolla, which I suppose will make my tC feel even faster when I get it back :D

my Eclipse GST did the same thing after I beat the snot out of it. You got lucky with the dealership giving you a new tranny. My question is is why they didn't just replace the syncos in the tranny you have??

It's probably less costly for them, especially with labor, to just pull one out and put a new one in. Considering to replace a synchro they have to pull it out and put it back in anyway. I'm sure they get a credit for the old transmission.

Well, it took two weeks, but I finally got my car back yesterday. After feeling what the new tranny was like, I'm sure that my old one was bad from the start. The replacement is much smootherin att the gears. I just can't believe that it took that long to get the part, I mean its the same as the Camry, they should hundreds of those trannys sitting around. Has anyone else had a long wait for parts?

I'ts a different part number than one for a Camry and not many have been replaced so there aren't that many available as spares at this point. Normally if a low milage car comes in with a trans problem (rarely), it's better to install a new tranny than have to order parts and wait for them to come in to fix the car. Less trouble for both parties. You should be good to go now.

I had a very similar prob. I noticed day to day that the shifting from 2nd to 3rd and so on was getting really hard and then sometimes really smooth. then one night i decided to haul ___ and when i got to 3rd gear i put it in and that _____ poped right out and i had to hold it in 3rd for it to stay. well toyota said there is a problem with some of the 5speed trannys and that i need another one. well a week later and i got the car back. I drove the car home that night and the next morning got up for work drove all the way to work and noticed smoke comming from the engine bay and could smell something terrable. so i poped the hood didnt see anything wrong. So i brought the car to a local dealership. about half the day goes by with no word on whats wrong with my car. so i call, they tell me the original dealership forgot to put some"TRANNY PLUGS" in and it had been leaking out fluid and was really low. This ment they would have to come tow it back to the original dealership i had the work done UNless i wanted to pay to have this dealership fix it. well they sent it back and the guy told me and my mom that his team doesnt work on the weekend and that they would look at it monday. well i get a call today 10/19 and they said hey Chad ur cars been ready since saturday. we called and left numerous messages but u never returned our calls. I asked if they replaced that new tranny because with it being drivin for over 50miles with very low fluid the new tranny was now and they said no we just replaced the missing plugs. WELL now i have to go pick up my car which i really do not want anymore but the reason im going through all of this is just to have you be aware anyone who gets a new tranny for their tC make sure you check for any oil leaking or u will end up having to wait even longer for another one. Maybe ur dealership wont be incompetant as the one i am now dealing with
