Like all forms of gambling, the winners are far more vocal than the losers. You hear the stories about the Chrysler that swallowed a valve at 70K miles and cost $3000 to fix, all paid for by the extended warranty. However, there are far more vehicles that go through their extended warranty period not needing any major repair.
Your best bet with a reliable car like a Toyota is to simply put that warranty money in the bank. Chances are, you won't need it. If you do, it will be there.
The Finance and Insurance guy will probably have some great scare stories to try and induce you to buy the extended warranty. You might ask him why you should purchase such a trouble-prone vehicle!

well, just to add fuel to the fire.. I'm still wondering about the extended warranty myself, due the experience my then g/f had... She was driving a RAV4 that her father had given her, alway immaculately kept and maintained. but at about 78k miles, something was woefully wrong with it producing volumes of smoke from under the hood for specific action, it was burning it off fluid due to a head gasket leak.. big money to fix that, but she was under the 100k warranty so fix they did... dunno, but I think George is right, you hear from the winners more than the losers on this, and also remember if you go aftermarket parts on anything that is remotely connected to something else that fails, no dice on that warranty..

i may add it before i reach 36k on my xB.....
the idiot money/finance guy at the dealership, not the sales man, said something like. "You know there are alot of big things that can go wrong with a car after 36k miles." I was like, "Ya....and that's why I am buying a toyota. They have fewer problems...duh." Now if I was buying a car from the dealership I work at, VW, hell ya you better buy that extra waranty...or you'll be screwed.
I got the deal here on mine, I doubt people will belive this... Im in FL and Orderd my Black XB last Friday, We dont get delivery untill Feb 3rd out here. Anyhow my dealer informed me when I put down my deposit that Fort Myers Toyota gives a "LIFETIME" powertrain warenty. This takes the normal Scion warentee part that goes 5 years 60,000 miles and extends it to as long as I own the car. Only conditions are that I have my services done at the dealership (so they know proper service has been done) and that it is not transferable to a second owner. I know oil changes at the dealer can be a little pricey but hey for that warentee.. Ill cough up a few extra bucks every oil change. how could I go wrong, Cheep car, Toyota quality, Stylish good looks, Increadable gas milage (compaird to my Big Block Blazer) and lifetime powertrain warentee???? AAnyopne in the Fort Myers area looking for a Scion give Jazmine Burhans a call at Fort Myers Toyota and shell hook it up.
