Default Anyone Renting a Car?

Heck, since me, my dad, and my wife are all going to Miami, I thought we'd just pool our cash and put it toward a rental car for two days... that way we can travel beyond south beach and go to coconut grove and such... I'm just thinking a crappy neon or something, but, it can't be too crazy for two days rental...

There's not a TON of free time to play around, but it sure beats taxis, shuttles, and gives me automotive freedom to explore late friday, as I'm no club-party freak and would enjoy walking coconut grove and seeing the sights there than being at that afterparty for too long...

hmm... time to check the websites for specials...

I'm driving down from Orlando in a rental - be prepared to pay for parking ($30/day) at any hotel in Miami Beach.

I'm getting a premium size (Dodge Charger) for $160 after taxes for 4 days - I'm sharing it with someone.

Too bad you get in so late (I'm 5:57) - I would have thrown you a few bucks for a ride to the hotel, to offset your cost even more!

Thats a damn good rate - I was going to get a "fun" car but wanted to have room in case I drive some people around so I went w/ a rear wheel drive Charger - least I hope thats what I get.

well you all got me thinking about renting a car too. But what I wanted to know is if there is any fees for my age (23). Me and my g/f are both the same age and wanted to see if its even worth renting. I found a 350Z on Hertz for only $195 for the weekend. Got me tempted to do it...

Usually in Florida - fee ($25 - $99/day) for under 25, each company is different.

From Hertz website:
Age Differential Charge Policy

At corporate locations in the United States, Puerto Rico, and St. Thomas Hertz will rent selected car class vehicles (Prestige Collection and some other models excluded) to customers who are age 21-24 with the following per day Age Differential Charge in addition to the normal rental rate.

All states except New York, age 21-24

Economy Car, Compact Car, Intermediate Car, Standard Car, Fullsize Car, Intermediate Sport, Economy Special,Fullsize
USD 27.00 per day

Other Car Classes (some models excluded)
USD 37.00 per day

ok. so the fee isnt that bad...the other question i had is are most of you getting insurance from the car rental agencies? To me its better than something happening to the car. Or do they automatically cover the car up to a certain amount? Also im afraid of getting a nice car while im there. I was looking into a 300 or a Magnum but i dont know how the theft rate is in Miami and am afraid it will get messed with. So if any of you can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Insurance is usually not needed but it is up to your personal insurance company if they cover you in a rental (checked with mine and they do). I was going to drive my car but the drivers in Miami are crazy and if something did happened, it won't be my car.

I will also warn people getting rentals - there are tolls to get from MIA to Miami Beach (rte 112 is a toll rode). I've got an automated pass so one less worry there for me.

Seems like more trouble than its worth to me, unless peeps are staying extra time. There's so many things to see/do within walking distance of the hotel. It could take more time than just geting a taxi to get thru the rental. Rental, ins, extra charge for extra drivers, gas, Tolls to get to Miami Beach, 30 a day to park at the hotel, probably valet parking so you'll need a tip and have to wait for your car to be retrieved. Finding parking when you go somewhere and probably having to pay. Have to watch your drinking, remember where you parked, hope you don't get targeted as tourist in rental car. For the roughly 40 hours we'll be there, how many hours are going to be free?

hmm you do have a point ScionicMan. I'd say it would run me about $200 for the 2 days i would have the rental. That includes everything you said. I could use that $ for other things. The reason why i wanted a rental is from what ive researched, there is basically bars and clubs in south beach, well so far thats what ive seen. I also thought maybe taking a taxi everywhere could bet expensive too...
