chipper jones said in an interview last night that he feels that a rod is gonna go thru the same thing bonds is/was going thru when he got close to the record.

I've heard the rumors that McGwire and Canseco were juiced since the late 80s, I didn't think less of the As during their glory years, and I hated the As. Then when Sosa and McGwire were doing their thing, I honestly felt they may have been juiced, yet I didn't feel any of their numbers were tainted then, or now. They just seemed to fall in line with the rest of the league's sudden power burst (due to PEDs, expansion, smaller parks, better health technologies, whatever).

Sosa and McGwire did some extroadinary things, but when it's alll said and done, their numbers show that they were great power hitters, but that's all. I was in awe when they broke 61, and I would have been in awe had they broke 755. The thing is, they just weren't good enough.

that yr was amazing....i didnt think anything of it at the time that they were juiced...i think i was just caught in the moment of all the home runs. but after the season was over and i was thinking about it, it crossed my mind they may have been. and then mcgwire at the congressional hearing. man o man he dug his own grave.

but the ppl that i mentioned in my post earlier, i know never would have hit 756, they were more of an example purposes bcuz we pretty much know they cheated in some form. im sure alot of ppl think that barry cheated in some form as well.

and on a side note, have u guys ever read 'juiced'?

Do you remember how great Junior was with the Mariners? man he was my favorite player (answering your statement about my favoring Bonds cuz im from SF area) anyway he was the one talked about being able to break the record, he is steriod free, but WAS not conditioned and never was the same after major injuries. this is why i respect bonds. but congrats for Griffey's sudden rejuvination this year, always loved him.
I agree %100, being from the seattle area it was a sad day when Griffey left, but he was just the first in a long line of great ballplayers to leave Seattle.

I think a better example would be:

If your favorite team won a World Series championship, and some players took PEDs, how would you feel?

Another problem with the "steroid era" is that it is impossible to measure the actual affect on someone's numbers. Does it really make you superhuman? How many feet does it add to your homeruns? Can it improve your ability to recognize pitches? How many MPHs does it add to your fastball? We'll never know.

I was listening to the news one day as someone was trying to explain the effect of steroids. In a nutshel: Off steroids, you can maximize your potential to a certain measure. On steroids, you may be able to hold that max potential just a little bit longer. This is why, steroids are most effective in Track and Field where strength and speed can be measured more easily.

With Baseball, there are way too many external factors involved. You have to take into account the abilities of your opponents. Every pitcher has a different release point and delivery. Each pitch is a different speed and location. So on and so forth.

So really, it's not that I condone illegal PEDs, it's just that I haven't been convinced that it can make you a superstar. Nor do I believe it is worth going into the past trying to determine who did and didn't, otherwise we'd have to erase the last 20 years from the record books.

Upper Playground

It's one of those hipster stores in San Francisco that sells limited edition tees, fitted caps, and rare sneakers.

and of course sleep3r is gonna agree with stankubrick, they are borh from california....if bonds happened to still be in pittsburgh they wouldnt be defending him to this extent.

im sure you know when u started this thread that ppl that dislike bonds are gonna post and express their opinons. and some of those ppl might not have as much background to the game as others. i know i have been a baseball fan since i was 5 and started playing little league. i have been to the hall numerous times. held season tix for the phillies when i used to live in pa and have gone to countless mets & yankees games not that i dont live to far from NY. so i hope you really werent aiming your comment of knowledge of the game in my direction...pretty much i breath baseball, but just dont like bonds, and like i said before i never have and never will.

o and i watch espn like its my religion.
I'm from Texas and live in NJ, yet I will defend Bonds to no end because he is being accused and convicted by the people of something he has always tested negative for.

It's like when your government identity gets erased and you no longer exist. Everyone that has a clue knows it's not right, but in the eyes of the public you're not a person.

I just need to step out of the discussion for a second to state that wikipedia and ESPN are not the end all be all.

Back on topic, the greatest player ever is a matter of opinion. I'd say Ruth was the greatest, because he did everything. It's my opinion. I still think what Barry has done is great.

Ruth was 94-46 with a career 2.28 ERA.

How many games did Mays win?

everyone talks about him testing negative. when and how many tests has he had to take? i know of none. u have to figure that he is under sooooo much scrutiny right now that any test he took whether it was pass or fail would have been broadcasted to the world by now. im still not saying that hes using steroids but nobody knows the truth and when the truth is really known thats when i will pass my judgement
