It may be the most prestigious record in baseball, and even that is arguable but in all sports?? I don't think so.

Ted Williams batting average.
Cal Ripkins consecutive game record.
Joe Dimaggio's hit streak

I used to watch baseball a lot and still enjoy it.

Lance Armstrong winning the Tour 7 straight times IMO is way more impressive.
Yeah, but no one really cares about the Tour de France, and unless you are a die-hard baseball fan, most people don't remember Ted William's batting average or the number of Cal Ripken's consecutive game record. Maybe some know Joe DiMaggio's hit streak. Yes, I do agree that these records may never be broken again, but the HR record is the one that everybody knows.

Right now, support for Barry is 60/40 - more people against him, but over time, people will come to accept whatever number he ends up with. It's a shame too because all those righteously indignant baseball fans whining about Barry today are missing out on a one-in-a-lifetime talent.

Maybe the US, but around the world I don't think so!

I think it is an impressive record steroids or not!

I don't have a feeling either way about Bonds, I don't think he is going to be as memorable as some of the other hall of fame inductees.

do i care for barry bonds? nope
do i think barry bonds is taking steroids? i have no idea nor does it matter to me cuz i dont like him. never have never will.

but i will give him credit, he is a hell of a baseball player.

i wanna see someone break the 'iron man' streak. this day in sports that alot harder then hitting the ball out of the park

of course they are going to congratulate him, it's a great accomplishment.

I am not taking that away from him, but to say Barry Bonds is the greatest in baseball period is laughable, considering the history of the sport. Not to mention steroids or not there is going to be a "taint" involved with him until the end of time.

Yeah, I don't trust a word that comes out Bush's mouth. It's ironic that he wants to bring steroids to the forefront of public discourse, yet while he was owner of the Texas Rangers, he didn't mind signing Jose Canseco. Bush is such a hypocrite.

It's the props from other pro athletes that I will take to heart, especially other basbeall players. From what I've seen and read, most pro basbeall players, the ones who know how hard the sport really is, are the ones who truly understand how great Barry is with or without steroids. Barry might not get much respect today or even in his lifetime (maybe through his own faults), but he will get his proper due one day just like other great _______s players of the past have...lol

dude do you think that ESPN is the bible of sports? LOL

and because he has the all time home run record does not make him the greatest baseball player of all time, he has a record.

It is an opinion that he is the greatest not a FACT!

and like I said I'm not a Bonds hater.

i didnt say that he was the the best because he is now homerun king, it has been stated way before the homerun chase. if you watch enough baseball, you will notice all the intentional walks he has, most feared player of all, pitchers always pitch around him, ect ect

it is not JUST because he is homerun king

go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_bonds

that will give you a little more info on bonds, since you like another source other than ESPN

and look at ALL those accomplishments/records he holds.......i didnt even mention about him being the only player in the 500 hr 500 sb club........if you wanna talk about tour de france and all that, great players in baseball = Power & Speed

So who do you consider the greatest baseball player(s) of all time better than Bonds? (Not trying to argue, just for fun baseball talk)

Here's my top 3 baseball players of all time (in no order): Willie Mays, Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds. I think a case can be made for any of these 3 for GOAT.

(I only included Major Leaguers since we have verifiable stats. Otherwise, some Negro League players would have to be considered)

Ruth, Williams, Aaron, Gehrig, Dimaggiao in no particular order.

Maybe Bonds, ask me in 10 years or so, lol.

u guys remind of the ppl on this site that back up zpi all the time....no matter what happens to them, they are there....no matter what happens to bonds, you 2 will always be there...

and of course sleep3r is gonna agree with stankubrick, they are borh from california....if bonds happened to still be in pittsburgh they wouldnt be defending him to this extent.

im sure you know when u started this thread that ppl that dislike bonds are gonna post and express their opinons. and some of those ppl might not have as much background to the game as others. i know i have been a baseball fan since i was 5 and started playing little league. i have been to the hall numerous times. held season tix for the phillies when i used to live in pa and have gone to countless mets & yankees games not that i dont live to far from NY. so i hope you really werent aiming your comment of knowledge of the game in my direction...pretty much i breath baseball, but just dont like bonds, and like i said before i never have and never will.

o and i watch espn like its my religion.

and dont forget there is more going on with bonds then just the streroids

the feds are on him about tax evasion too and they just got another 6 month extension on that investigation.

how would u guys feel if it was sammy sosa or rafael palmeiro or i will even throw in mark mcgwire too, (hypothetically) breaking the home run record, knowing they had cheated in the past? the way i look at bonds breaking the record is that many ppl look at him and feel as if he had cheated to get to this point.....thats not how i feel tho, show me a test where he failed and then i will jump on that wagon tho.

bangorXB, im glad you asked that.

Honestly, in my opinion if they everyone in the MLB pumped steriods, they wouldn't be able to do it like bonds (not saying he did anyway).

As for Sammy, he's a extra cheater with the cork in his bat, now he came back from fleeing away and he's not even that good right now. So he can't do it, but he would take even more heat than bonds because of the cork if he did break it. and honestly last time i heard bout sammy was when he got hit in the helmet LOL

and rafael no period. lol

big mac he could'nt either because of his legs and not conditioned. BTW lately he's been looking like **** nowadays

+1 for Barry because he was able to aviod any major injuries that could of sidelined him from breaking the record.

For the breaking the record ?, i think with all the people involved with steriods, Sammy would be closest but thats it.

However, I stated before that AROD will break it i say in about 7-8 years if he is injury free.

Do you remember how great Junior was with the Mariners? man he was my favorite player (answering your statement about my favoring Bonds cuz im from SF area) anyway he was the one talked about being able to break the record, he is steriod free, but WAS not conditioned and never was the same after major injuries. this is why i respect bonds. but congrats for Griffey's sudden rejuvination this year, always loved him.

And BTW, when i watched Bonds back in 86 w/ the pirates i was like man i like this guy he is quick and got power. So i liked him before he was a giant.
