Default Do you REALLY know what you're voting for?

I wish soooo bad that I could find a video link that was out 4 years ago when John Kerry was running against George Bush. I can't find it anywhere and it's driving me nuts! Anyhow, here's the basic premise:

They set up a room and had people between 18 and 25 yrs old come in. They questioned them about politics, and as was expected, the vast majority of them said they were voting for John Kerry. It was explained that younger voters typically gravitate toward the liberal side largely because of a biased media influence and celebrity endorsements. Sound familiar? Anyways, what they did next was pretty cool. They had the people sit down and fill out a 50 question survey of how they felt about issues. It covered everything from the economy, health care, moral issues, national defense...ect. When the results were scored, over 65% of those same people actually answered according to the conservative or Republican side. The video was really funny. When they showed the results to them, many were like, "Holy Sh*t...I'm a republican?!" The people who shot the video concluded by making the point that many young people vote democrat because it's the "cool thing to do". Yet when they really examine how they feel about the issues, many disagree with the liberal mindset.

If anyone finds that video, please post it here.

Hah yes. It bothers me to see how many young people want to vote for Obama because other people are doing it (celebrities), or because he's black, or because he's young and Mccain's an old geezer, or because Mccain's just another Bush.
I would also like to see the video.

I'm pretty sure it was done at a college. I first saw it on TV but there were links on the internet later on.

No. It's some retarded religious nut preaching about how she will only vote for the candidate who is more faithful to god and jesus. Then she goes on to say that Obama has links to Atheism, Muslims, and the 'wrong' Christianity.

Just trying to prove a point, that this stuff goes both ways.

Yes, exactly. You're proving the same point I'm proving. This goes both ways. There are tons of uneducated voters on each side.

Exactly, which means this thread is useless. If this thread was about teaching both sides, then it would have worth. However, it isn't about both sides, it's a direct attack at Liberals.

I also love this
biased media influence
, yet you fail to mention the older generation who watches nothing but Fox News.

Of course it does. I'm sure the same test could (and probably did) reveal a few people who thought they were conservative but tested more liberal. But I do honestly think that there are loads of people who are voting for Obama simply because "everyone else is, so he must be pretty good". I think more people who vote republican are doing so because they took the time to educate themselves on where the candidates stand on things that are important to them. Let's face it, voting republican certainly isn't the cool thing to do so it must be for good reasons. Think about it.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to say that there are WAY more people who will vote Republican because it's the 'Christian' thing to do. People who are so blinded by religion, that they don't even know there is another option.

It's the same thing with Obama being black. The amount of people who will vote for him because he is black, counters the people who won't vote for him because he is black.

Granted, that massive population barely counts towards anything because the bible-belt states don't even make up that many electoral votes.

It all balances itself out.

Of course...that's certainly part of it. But that's because Christians view things like ___ marriage and abortion as wrong, and the conservative side is typically against those things. Again, it's about the issues. I can respect anyone for basing their vote on the issues, even if I disagree with them. That's what makes this country great. What I have a problem with are people who vote a certain way because of popularity, charisma, or because Matt Damon or Madonna said to.

We're less than two weeks away from the election. It's prime time to discuss this stuff.

Yes, the majority is bias, and the majority has made up their mind on which side they will take, but there are a lot more people than you think that are 'moderate' and indecisive. People who take stances on both sides of the fence.

Take me for example, I'm very liberal, yet I stand for the death penalty. One of the many reason why I think having the D/R parties is completely useless.

My vote will come down to whichever candidate has a stronger influence on advancements in Science. McCain is for Coal energy and has flopped on Stem Cell research (with Palin on-board, I doubt he'll get anywhere with that). Obama is for renewable energy and is for Stem Cell research. The other issues don't directly affect me, so I don't care much about them.

I totally agree. Why do we have to choose a side and then hope it lines up with how I feel better than the other side. There is never a "perfect fit". For instance; Just because I'm a conservative on most issues doesn't mean I don't care about the environment.

I added more.

But yeah, our election system fails. The people have no say in who runs for president, and the people have no say in who becomes president. Some democracy we have.

There are certain things about the republicans I don't like... I'm not for the death penalty, and I'm all for giving citizenship to illegals who follow the law, are integrated into society, and honestly came here for a better life. I think the gblt's should have the same rights as heteros. And I have zero problems with gene research.

Then there are things I can't really affect, like abortion. Do I think it's murder? I don't know. Do I think it's wrong? More yes, than no, but I don't know. Do I have a stance on it? Well, seeing as I can't have one,... I'd rather no abortions, but it's not my choice. I get worked up deciding if I want onions on my Whopper. I can't fathom making a choice like that.

I'm not religious at all.

All of this should make me a liberal, but I'm not. I can't ever be a liberal. I listen to guys like Alan Combs and Keith Olberman, and just want to tear my hair out. So it's not that people are blinded by religion... Some of us will only go so far, but we know that if we do vote for a democrat, they're willing to drag us the rest of the way.
