dont EVER ship through UPS
mods please move, i couldnt post in the off-topic.
anyway, i work at UPS (plant engineering) and my job is to make sure the conveyors, and equipment are working properly. before and during the sort.... all i cna say is, is that i have NEVER seen such disrespect for other peoples things like i do here...the stack only so many emblem doesnt mean crap, this side up doesnt mean crap, and most definatly "handle with care" and fragile dont mean crap....im 25 and im damn lucky i landed this job ( im the youngest they ever hired for my position cause you have to be some high level journeyman to even be looked at) but holy crap, i know i will NEVER EVER ship ANYTHING through my own company. packages just get thrown on the floor, run over buy the trucks they use to carry the irregular size and over 70lb. packages with. they get kicked with brutal force when theres a jam (instead of turning off the belt and unjamming it by hand) sorry for the rant, but last night was hell and i feel like i have to babysit these guys just so they dont damage my belts or equipment. but at the same time, i like making $30/HR just walking around for about 70% of the time, while their busting their ***** tossing boxes for $8.50/HR

I hope you can "tough it out"
I have had decent luck with UPS, my issue is the cost, its almost twice as much as DHL which is who i usually ship ground packages through, I will never use FedEx after the driver stole a set of one off HRE rims and it took 4 monthes to resolve the issue. Not only did they find the rims in his house and arrest him, they rims got confinscated as evidence, and it took 4 monthes to get the insurance money and the whole thing sorted out, but i actually ended up getting the rims from the police, and my insurance oney so i guess it worked out, its just the principal. all i can say is no matter who you ship with get the insurnace and tracking number.
I used to work at UPS back in my school days. I was a package handler in Seattle. I sure didn't care about FRAGILE or THIS SIDE UP labels. My job was to move the packages from one place to another as fast as possible. We were always told to go faster, faster by management and there were no penalties AT ALL for damaging a package on accident.
That being said, no one there was trying to damage anything, but the attitude passed down from above was that fragile items should be packaged properly -- and if something was broken then insurance would cover it.
That was ten years ago. Today I ship plenty by UPS and have had no major problems.

i've always preferred fedex, but the reality is i'm sure this happens with any shipping company you'd ship through. still a good post, haha.
