I need to buy an electric sander to sand down an ugly dresser that i received so that i can paint it. Any experience or suggestions as to what type to get?

 

hmmm....I'm not quite sure what type would be "the best" for that job, but I have a basic palm sander. It does a really good job. You can either buy the regular, rectangle shapped sandpaper that has to be clamped into the sander, or you can buy the square, sticky-back type that you just peel and stick. I highly recommend the sticky kind. As far as brands go, I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. DeWalt or other contractor grade tools will outlast homeowner grades like Skill. But, palm sanders are inexpensive and even a basic one will last for years. Mine is a Sears Craftsman (maybe $25) and I've never had a problem.

 

A Random Obit by Porta Cable is all we use here at work. Best thing out there. Finish off with a finish sander.

If you can, just strip the finish off the dresser....It is very likely that it has a very thin verneer and sanding will ruin it. Then go over with steel wool.

 

don't paint it!!! stain it , the finish would look lot better when your done with it!!!

 

To be sure it's a vaneer. Be very VERY carefull if you sand. Stripping is better than triing to rub one out by yourself....

I like Dewalt. I've never had a problem with one. Actually, I like Milwaukee better than any of them. Have you seen the new cordless stuff from Milwaukee? It uses a lithium ion battery instead of the old NiCad stuff. They charge faster, last a lot longer, and it's 28 volts!

i used to sell tools for a living and dewalt is crap.


28volts? wow that's got to be ghastly expensive.
