Hey Gun Owners
Can I purchase a handgun from someone and register it in my name? How can I find out if the gun is "clean"?
I know a gun "collector" and he's trying to "downsize" his collection and I think I wanna buy one. I just want it to protect my property...
I know there are some of you that own firearms and can help me...thanks.

Best person to ask is your sheriff. Laws are different in every state.
But honestly, if all you want to do is protect your property, you can get a Mossberg pump action really cheap from a gun store. Also, you can buy any number of coach guns even cheaper. Lastly, cheapest option, for $30 for 3 years, you can get a CFL and collect your own guns, like Mausers, Mosins, SKS's, Makarov's, etc.

you need to ask the sheriff's office, get a registration #, get a serial #, and then you need to go through a background check to have it switched over to your name.....thats how it is in Washington.
It varies state to state. Call your local police station or sherriff's office for details. They can also run the potential gun's serial numbers to ensure its clean.
In most states, you do NOT need to register your firearm. You also do not need to go through the background checks to purchase from another private individual. This is that whole "gun show loophole" they talk about, where gun shows used to have private individuals doing a big swap meet. Things have changed, now it's just registered dealers, and they run the background checks.
In all states, you don't need a permit to own a firearm, but there are restrictions to how and where you can carry it. Some allow open carry, some require concealed weapons permits, and some won't issue a permit in order to try to discourage you from ownership. You generally cannot carry concealed without a concealed permit.
You may, in some states, keep one in your car, with or without a permit. I do not have a CCW permit, but I keep a gun in the car. Perfectly legal in Louisiana, and I'm happy to have it with me.
Many questions, many answers. Call your police station, they'll set you up.

Oh, and if you're debating on selecting a property defense firearm....
1) A shotgun with heavy buckshot is the most effective close range weapon ever devised. Period. There is nothing else that can dump THAT much energy into a target in an effective way, short of impractical military weapons.
2) Pistols take second place, since they're much more maneuverable. Just be sure to do your research, and get a caliber small enough to handle, but big enough to do the job.
3) If you want a carbine (short rifle, may shoot pistol or rifle rounds)... an AK / AR .... or any firearm that has more than 10 in the magazine. BUY IT NOW... Obama will bring back the ridiculous assault weapons ban which will ban virtually all semi-automatic weapons, or at least put heavy restrictions on them.
For those that don't know guns....
Semi-auto = One trigger pull, one pullet. Multiple shots then reload. Can be revolvers or slide-action.
Full-auto guns are still available, and able to be purchased... but they require additional permits and something like $200 per year in taxes. They also subject you to some INTENSE scrutiny by the local authorities.

I would add one thing to the advice others have given here: Please...if you have kids or if any other kids could ever possibly end up in the same area as the gun, do not keep it loaded. I own about a dozen guns (handguns, rifles, and shotguns) and they are all unloaded and locked up. I realize that makes them pretty-much useless for home protection, but the odds of a child getting ahold of them are probably much higher than the odds of me needing one for defense.
Check your regulations. Here in CA we have a 10 day waiting period. You go to your local gun store and just tell them what you are doing and you want to register a gun to your name. At that point they gun shop will hold it for 10 days, while paperwork gets filed, etc & then it's yours. Usually a fee.
You can browse the laws for purchasing/owning guns in any state at http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/. However, like everyone has been saying, once you think you understand the law, just make a quick 2 minute call to your sheriff and verify that you really do understand it.
I honestly don't think this will happen with the love affair we have for our guns here, and the recent Supreme Court ruling. With Obama's whole 'citizen army' nonsense, I have serious problems believing Americans will let them take our guns away too. If the administration goes after anything, I expect it will be the price of ammunition.
