The iPad was a good idea, just poorly executed but the majority of the Apple faithful, those who can't put together a decent pro/con list and those who can't afford to boost will buy it.

You guys will be happy to know that I am writing this reply on my new ipad 32gig 3G. This tng is awesome... But I guess I'm not changing any minds around here.

Just to clarify: I didn't say that the ipad should replace a laptop... I said it was easier to travel with and it does most of what most people need on the go. Am I going to stop using my laptop? No. Of course not. This thing is great for taking photos, music, movies, etc with you. It is great for catching up on TV shows. Great for seeing what is on cable TV (way faster than surfing the Comcast box). Great for catching up on emails and forums. I could go on. Is it limited? Yeah... There's no doubt. However, it does enough to keep most people entertained for hours on end. Oh, and you can put pictures on it directly from a camera or an SD card with the camera connect kit. I think this should have been standard, but oh, well.

You'll see a lot more of them on college campuses in the next few months or years. Many colleges have already decided to hand out ipads to all incoming students. Imagine carrying one ipad instead of a hundd pounds worth of textbooks!

you carry it around just like a laptop so how is it easier? just because you do have to lift up the screen it is easier? I dont see how carrying around another $800 devise just to check some old tv shows or photos is particle at all.

Particle? I guess you mean practical. I am really surprised that nobody but me is showing any love for the iPad. Seriously though, you have to use one to see what it is all about. They are way smaller than a laptop and they are awesome for consuming media. Why does anyone use a cell phone when you could just carry around a 3G net book with Skype? The net book would do WAY more than a cell phone can do. Because cell phones do what they do a lot more gracefully than a net book.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse here. It is clear that I am the only one who sees anything good in the iPad. After having one for only slightly more than a day, I can say that I won't be traveling with my laptop any more.

whoops yea practical.

wow yea your comparison is crazy, a cell phone to a computer. You should defiantly try to become a salesman for these.

if you are happy with your purchase then who cares.

I find it kind of funny that the iPad haters are so active in talking about how much they hate it. I mean, if you don't need or want one, then what's the use of trash talking it? Oh, well... That happens on these forums, anyway (Toyota vs Honda vs VW etc.). I guess it is only natural for people to keep up the PC vs Mac debate. However, the iPad is a whole new category, so there's really no debate other than "I like it" vs "I hate it".

A lot more people would see the point if they used one for a few hours. It is amazing to hold the Internet like a book.

The debate isn't Mac vs PC, it's practicality and usability for the cost.

The tablet idea isn't new, it's very old, it's an old idea reinvented.

You spend $500, WiFi only, or roughly $130 more for the added capability of 3G and for what. You have a glorified iPod Touch for the most part. I understand Steve-O's logic behind the device, it offers reader like functionality and a way for traditional paper magazines to assuage their filing businesses but making their publications available. It offers the ability to check email on the fly in a more functional form than what most smartphones are capable of doing.

Aside from that, the usability is in question. It has the capability of video playback, only if those online videos are in HTML5 format, no flash here which is the most widely used format on the web. Certainly the future is HTML5, but when it comes to electronics, people want the NOW.

The lack of USB ports is huge, the necessity to use iTunes for ALL content is another problem. Most people want a fully functional device for their needs and that's something the iPad does not offer. Regardless of the debate versus how useful a productivity suite is, MS Office, in light of the new cloud computing era, Google Docs, one cannot forget that it's still the most widely used productivity suite and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

Then there is the ergonomic factor, the iPad is not a device that one would want to hold for any appreciable length of time.

To its credit it does have a beautiful screen and it uses what some would consider to be the most usable interface to date but at the end of the day it's about functionality/usability vs cost and most, at least here, cannot see the advantage right now.

When the iPad is opened, you see a battery, huge LCD and logic bard the size of the iPhone's which lets you know the device is not meant for anything other than reading so is the cost justifiable for just reading is the question.

I don't think anyone here hates the device, it's just a matter of if they see it as something they could realistically use.

Will it replace the laptop, no, but on some short trips it might be nice to tote an iPad as apposed to a laptop.

I'll probably get one of these tablet devices but it won't be the iPad, the things it can't do far outweigh the things it can for my usage.

Writing this using my iPad this thing will never replace my laptop or desktop but it is a wonderful device to have. Love not having to boot up my laptop or desktop just to surf the web. Battery last forever on this thing Had it over a week used a few hours a day and have not charged it yet! Love it lol
