the d90 kit lens is OK. i mean, its got its ups and downs... if he's just starting with his first dSLR, its good for him. i got my d90 with the kit lens and i love it.
as for his first lens, maybe the 50 1.8... i love this lens. now, im looking at either 17-55 2.8 or the 24-70 2.8 lens... but its at least $1k though.

however if you underexpose the back and use flash then it evens outs. but for these two particular photos I posted. I purposely underexposed the background dramatically for a stylistic look. both photos were taken around 3pm on a bright sunny day.
if you want a more balanced exposure than use a wider aperture, higher iso or shorter shutter speed, take your pick.

anyhow, my ideas of post processing.
I do very little, because Im lazy. however Post will allow your photos to have the edge to compete with the pro level photos, which are all heavily processed as Ive found out not too long ago.
very rarely will I do heavy processing i.e. crop, rotating or selective healing and masking, is for really important photo events like weddings and the such, however I dont post any of the important photos online.
most, almost all my photos are just raw adjusted, curves tweaked and resized. if the photo is in low light chances are ill Ill do a smidget of smart sharpen. this post adjustments take about 30 seconds. it is what it is.
but seriously, industry standards in the field will REQUIRE post processing. If you don't than you wont have a chance to keep up with the pro's.
straight photos from the camera in jpeg format can only get you so far.
