1/250 sec and flash, you should have no issues of a moving puppy in low light. there really is no need to adjust anything in manual for a moving object once use set it right before the shot.

unless you mean manual focus, than ya that would be an issue. Manual exposure adjustments not so much.

the d90 kit lens is OK. i mean, its got its ups and downs... if he's just starting with his first dSLR, its good for him. i got my d90 with the kit lens and i love it.

as for his first lens, maybe the 50 1.8... i love this lens. now, im looking at either 17-55 2.8 or the 24-70 2.8 lens... but its at least $1k though.

if you want a more balanced exposure than use a wider aperture, higher iso or shorter shutter speed, take your pick.
Thank you RnB180 for taking the time for the clear and thorough explanation. Very good pics whether PSed or not.
thanks
anyhow, my ideas of post processing.
I do very little, because Im lazy. however Post will allow your photos to have the edge to compete with the pro level photos, which are all heavily processed as Ive found out not too long ago.

very rarely will I do heavy processing i.e. crop, rotating or selective healing and masking, is for really important photo events like weddings and the such, however I dont post any of the important photos online.

most, almost all my photos are just raw adjusted, curves tweaked and resized. if the photo is in low light chances are ill Ill do a smidget of smart sharpen. this post adjustments take about 30 seconds. it is what it is.

but seriously, industry standards in the field will REQUIRE post processing. If you don't than you wont have a chance to keep up with the pro's.
straight photos from the camera in jpeg format can only get you so far.

I wasn't ignoring you ... Now I know to expect that the lens isn't all it's cracked up to be, but it's like you said, I know nothing about it so it shouldn't make a difference for the mean time... I was fairly impressed with the images I seen with that lens, and when I get a new one I'll be even more impressed with better pictures... I'll post some "newbie" pictures when I get it in , but I do appreciate the input...
