Flash bounced off the ceiling? Off camera would yield better results. Since the D40 doesn't have CLS you may want to look into a TTL cord or radio triggers.

Most definitely. Built in flash is useless, imo. I only use it to trigger my SB-600 or on the rare occasion to provide front fill.

I wonder will the 16-35 be better than the 12-24? But I definitely wouldn't mind that 24mm 1.4. Maybe after I go FF.
