I'm sure we have a darkroom in the Art/Photography department here at school but I don't know anyone to gain access to it. Maybe I'll take photography as an elective next semester. Until then I'll just have it developed at Wolf or where ever.

Plus, looking at the film for the first time a week later is more exciting than you would think. Haha
Yeah that's the main reason I bought it. That and I like retro stuff. It's kind of funny that my camera is older than I am lol. And I agree the anticipation of seeing the film after a week of shooting is exciting.

I apologize for my sticklerness, but Jon, it would be vintage, not retro. Unless you bought a newly made film slr?

Ah I thought those words were synonymous. I guess had I bought a FM3a it would be retro as those were made up until 2006.

something i've been intrigued about lately is how the level of zoom changes the size of things in your background.

big mountain at...

18mm

60mm

95mm

170mm

not that it's rocket science or anything. but i imagine learning how this changes your photos could really help people looking for a specific shot of their subject. i guess more important would be actually retaining the information for when time is very limited and you have only a one-chance photo op and you don't want to guess wrong. i dunno just found it interesting. something i'd like to keep in the mental toolbox. maybe this helps someone out there.

Cool video. I've seen pics from there post-Katrina but that's the first video. If I was still in MS I'd take a trip to try and check it out.

Snow, yeah it's called Compression and expansion. Also works with DOF. the longer the lens the shorter the DOF will be at the same aperture.

Now can anyone tell me why a lens is the aperture it is (cause lenses are different sizes and some how have the same aperture value)?

i think it has to do with how it's built... how much light it can let in? i dunno.

is there an equation out there for DOF compression? like say 35mm @ f/2.8 will have the same depth as 180mm @ f/5.6. something like that would be interesting to test out.

there are DOF calculators. Compression is different from DOF tho. It's always good to know that a wide lens with expand ur background and a longer lens will compress (smoosh) it. Like my 135L is AMAZING at creating smoosh haha and a 16-35mm lens will make a landscape look like it goes on forever.

here is the answer to the question.

I really like how this came out.

My current wish list:
New flash (the one used in that pic was from '82 lol)
Lens (ANY would be an improvement)
Battery grip
