Did you turn on the noise reducer on the 7D? When I shot with it off I hated the noise... just too much. Turned it on and the noise actually complements the photo's I take at 1600+ a lot better.

I like high ISO and the associated noise with BW pictures, but not so much in color photography.

I have the noise reducer on "normal", but its pointless anyway to a RAW file which is what I use... I have software to take care of noise if I need to clean up anything. I have no problems with the 6400 ISO images though out of camera.

Here is a shot I have at ISO 6400... The detail retention is excellent. Very mild noise reduction with Neat Image.

I have no problem shooting auto iso 200-3200 on my D90.

LR3's noise reduction has allowed 6400 to be acceptable now.

7D does amazing with high ISO. These both 12,800 at f/2.8 - No noise reduction other than lightroom 3 (mild at that). I had no choice but to use 12,800 in this situation (I generally comfortable up to 6400) but after this, I will have no problem using 12,800 if need be.

I like IS stuff for certain high speed images like rushing water (pictured above) or a race car in motion shot. Those look great when the shutter speed is slowed down some.
