Default engine knocking

well everyone the tC looks like its deciding to quit on me... about 2 days ago I started hearing a pretty loud knocking sound when I press the gas.. I don't notice any performance loss but it sure is annoying and really doesn't sound healthy.. Tonight I changed the oil and added some stuff that says it "quiets engine noise".. I think thats a bunch of bull but anyways after running it around the block nothing has changed... any ideas?? if nothing works then time to trade it in.. please help..

Soupy, sounds like your main bearings are shot.

What the knocking is either the crankshaft hitting the bearing (your talking about hundreds of thousands of an inch) as it rotates or a rod bearing hitting the crankshaft. It eventually will get worse and egg shape the bearing and then eventually (key word there) let loose and the rod will go out the side of the block.

If your gonna trade it in, put straight 30 weight in the car and drive it over to the dealership. Should hold you over til you get the dealer to look at it and give you a number on the car for trade in value. The 30 weight is so thick it will quiet the knock down for a bit.

Hey soup, is yours an 05? Just curious as they revised the bearings on the 06+. If you need help finding a low milage engine locally, let me know. You can usually snag one for about $1000 or so.

Wow that stinks man. Well like I said, 2az engines are pretty easy to come by for not a lot of cash.

Also one of the reasons I will not run 0 weight oil in my car as toyota now wants us to do. I am used to getting 250-300K miles out of a motor. Lowest I am running right now is 5w30 in the summer. I feel running practically water in a motor will have a lot of negative effects on a motor in the long run such as the issues you are having. Just my humble opinion though.

go to www.car-part.com and enter AZ & look for a motor made after 05-2006. Tons of motors with low milage for around $1200

If it's knocking, why don't you answer it? Ha! But in all seriousness, I drove about 8,000 miles with a spun rod bearing, these motors are HARD to kill.

Go get a Toyota Tocoma from Chad @ Camelback Toyota. But hide the spare for about 1 month and you will live happily ever after! Camelback Toyota, not any were else and you will get ripped off and done in good with no KY!

Lame! Sorry to hear that. By the way when was your tC manufactured? Early 2006 tC's have the 2005 motor (and the issue with bearings) If its early 06 then thats what happened to others (and most likely mine too).

Look it over close. Which place did you buy it from? Did they offer a warranty?
