Being a police officer, please don't buy a gun just to leave it in your car. There are enough guns out there in the criminals hands that we don't need to give them anymore. If you do purchase a gun, please go to some sort of weapons safety class. Also I recommend getting a concealed weapons permit after you learn proper gun safety. As far as the sawed off shotguns/rifles, Mark was correct in saying that they are illegal but only if the barrel is cut below a certain length and/or the overall length is shorter than a certain length. Make sure if you do buy a weapon and carry it in your car, make sure it's in some type of holster and laying in open view. If stopped by police, inform them that there is a gun in the car and don't make any sudden movements. Theives sure love them Saturns!!!

Ah I totally forgot you were a police officer. Can you direct me to any classes or something that I have to take?

You can take the courses through the community colleges that I know of. My dad did that and was happy ever since. He can carry it anywhere with the exception of government buildings and casinos.

Here is a link I have found that might give you the answers to your questions.
