it's not against the law to cover the word "texas." They revised that law saying that it can cover part of the word "Texas", no lower than the "cross" of the "T"
No you can't cut the plate up.

i have a question: i got a european plate for a friend's mini cooper. she has it on the front. evan though the plate matches the info of the back texas [plate, is it illegal to have that polate on the front? does it have to be a texas plate on the front?
well one of our members has a european plate in the front an i dont think he's ever got anything or told anything for it. an i know ive seen a few other imports wit different plates as well. but wit the texas plate in back?.....
In Texas, it is illegal to have a damaged license plate. It is a common issue with bagged trucks who like to drag the frame rails and bumper while driving. Often, they will scrape the license plate on the ground as well, causing damage to the bottom end of the plate. If you get a cop who wants to give you problems, they can and will issue a ticket for it.
The Euro tag is the same deal. Technically, you are only supposed to display the tag from the state in which the vehicle is registered. Again, if the cop wants to be hard on you, he can give you a ticket for this.
The damaged plate ticket is going to be hard to get dismissed without spending the money to get a new plate.
The Euro tag, or a missing front plate ticket, are a little easier. All you need to to is prove to the clerk that you've fixed the issue. Buying 4 screws at the local hardware store and presenting the clerk with the receipt, stating that I had to replace the screws in order to mount the plate, has gotten me out of the "no front plate" ticket with my Camaro.

Many people who hang their plate in a different location than stock had to fab their own bracket. I have seen a few cars that used some stainless brackets to actually hold the plate out away from the bumper rather than drill the bumper itself. These brackets mounted somewhere inside the grill, out of visibility, and extended out beyond the bumper cover, holding the plate out as if it were floating. ...looks kinda cool on certain cars, others... not so much.
As for those cars that do not have front plates like Vettes and others, they ARE still required by law to have the front plates displayed. If they do not, then they can be ticketed. I've been through this more than once with the Camaro. I still have no intention of ever drilling holes in the front end of the car for that stupid plate! For the most part, the only thing people ever see of the car is the taillights anyway!
Probable cause is a touchy subject. Police officers have the upper hand with this, no matter what, when it comes to your car. Here's an example. If a police officer has you pulled over and asks if you have any problems with him/her searching your vehicle and you state that you are NOT ok with it, then they now have probable cause to search the vehicle. After all, if you have a problem with them searching the vehicle, then you may be hiding something. The same goes for in-field sobriety tests such as portable breathalyzers. If you refuse it, then the officer can arrest you on the spot for suspicion of DUI. Refusal in both circumstances is sufficient for "probable cause" in the eyes of the police department. Usually, the court system will favor the judgment of the officer over John Q. Citizen any day of the week. Be very careful what you do and say to a police officer. Their interpretation of your behavior could easily land you a night in the slammer and your car in an impound lot.

So it pretty much ends up the way most things do..."The cops mood at the time"
I figured cutting a very small portion off the bottom of the plate would be better than placing the whole plate on the windshield. I've gotten stopped plenty of times with out having any plate however it usually ends up in just a warning.

When I bought my xB in feb. 04 i told the dealer NOT to mount the front plate, I've never had a cop even look at me funny for not having it mounted. I'm just a point A to point B type of driver so I give them no real reason to pull me over.
