I recently got my tC and have been having lots of fun with it. The other night, I was coming home with my roommate in the car and a BMW 3 series blows by. My roommate loves BMWs and drives one, so he wants to know exactly which 3 series it is. I speed up to see and get pretty close. Just then we both pass a hiding officer (we are on 95 through Providence). He pulls out and comes after us. I saw him pull out as did the other driver and we both slowed down simultaneously to the speed limit. I'm looking in my rearview and saying to myself, "it's either him or me". Turns out, it was him. Cop blows by me and puts his lights on behind the BMW. So, I was wondering, are there certain procedures for pulling over a car "train"? Do you always go after the one in front?

Pulling over multiple cars is done on occasion.

I think you either drove off not realizing you were getting stopped too or you just got plaing lucky.

i did this one time....i was trying to catch up to a vette, yes stupid but oh well, in my old saturn the vette was playing a "u can't catch me game" blah, we blow by a cop going about 110-115 and the vette slowed down just enough to get behind me....i started to slow down and the vette flashed his highbeams at me in a "go ahead, i'll let you win" kind of manner...

met the guy a few days later, turns out he's a cop and knew he could get out of it....bastard!!

I have done this.....

If I spot two cars speeding I will turn my lights and make a stop. At this time I study both cars. If I see them both slow down then of course they saw me. Now comes the waiting game on who is going to stop. Each driver is waiting see if the other will stop for me. If this last for more than 15-20 seconds then i start chirping at both of them. Once again I can see they are wating each other out realizing that they are making me wait. Now there thinking "Dam the cop is getting ____ed". At one point someone has to stop and of course someone does since they know that they aren't going to get very far if I call in for back up. If both cars stop fine, no problem I'll handle it.

If one car stops and the other keeps going thinking "Ha ha he can't get us both". Well guess what. I can't ! So I'll radio the first plate and let the driver know I got it and I'll go and get the one who decided to keep driving. You bet your ___ he's not getting a brake. I'll be sure to let him know that the driver who stopped is getting a warning only since he stopped for me.

Someone asked me about levels of speed and arrest factors

I have to look it up since there is differences in state roads, private roads, and highways.

When The cop pulled up on us, the BMW and I had about 4 or 5 car lengths in between us. The cop didn't slow down behind me, just went straight to the BMW and threw the lights on once behind it. I didn't take any chances and exited 95 before they had a chance to stop. I don't think the cop read my plate because he was going pretty fast past me, but you cops are capable of amazing things... So, hopefully there will be no knock on my door.

 

I was just having a smoke with a Deputy from Fredericksburg, VA. He told me that they are about to deploy a multi target speed radar system that can clock 8 cars at a time! Just to add insult to injury, this system will read your plate and do the "wants and warrants" thing and send it directly to the computer in the police car by the time they get your butt pulled over.

The days of speeding down the road are quickly coming to an end. Be careful out there! I guess it's time to cover the box in carbon fiber!

 

OK after reading all 17 pages of this thread.....


1) I tend to speed. Who doesn't; but they way I do it is to usually keep up with traffic, or find a "lead car." This person would be the one flying down the highway prob 20 mph or so. I usually jump in behind them and hang 2-3 car lenghs between and 1-3 mph under him. Now it we get hit with a laser, radar, vascar etc.. Would he get tagged or me being the tail car? (relates to previous posts)

2) On the Minor with the Alk-e-haw. I have had this happen to me. Usually with the Howard County Cops (Rich county with lil crime). I was with a friend of mine one night. Rolled up to a poolhall and he was sitting in the back seats of his civic being the goof he was. This cop rolls up and he gets out of the car so we can go in. We notice the cops and he trys to get me to get rid of the bottle of beer he had been drinking. I was like no and he put it back in the car. We stopped outside and I notice that the cop had parked right behind my friend and my cars and was peering in his car with his flashlight. I walk over to my car to get out my soda and to check on the cop (being the smartass I am) and the cop immedately stopped what he was doing and stairs at me. I go "Is there a problem officer?" He was like no and trys to inconspicously peer into my car. I go "You wanna look?" and he was like "Do I need to?" and flips on his flashlight and looks inside I was like No and locked my car and walked off. The cops later come inside lookin for us and we wait for them to leave (2 cop cars blocked in our cars). So eventually they disappear and we walk out to our cars. As soon as we get into the cars the cops block us in. They had us sit outside our cars, made my friend pour out a full bottle of beer, gave 3 of us breathalizers (him, his gf and me) made him open his trunk. To this the cop remarks (OMG its Jimmy Hoffa). Evenally one of the cops tells the other one to knock off his bull____ and they leave just like that. My father (ex-cop) said this we deffinately harrassment but he was barely within his rights.

Recently the same thing happend to two of my friends at the same place. One got and alcohol Citation. The cop made him pour out 27 cans of beer.

What's your take on all this. How should we handle it in the future. How would you handle it. Mind you we are all 19-20.5.

3) Friend of mine got a ticket at Parkway (popular street racing spot) for squealing tires. He went to court the judge dropped the point but raised the fine. Now his gf has her first ticket for 16mph over and doesn't want to take it to court cause she fears she will get a higher fine. Suggestions for her?

4) My father being the ex-cop he is has some billyclubs. I used to carry one in my old car under the seat for protection (when ex-gf trys to get groups of guys to jump you ya need something). Now is this considered a) Carrying a weapon b) Consealing a weapon c) It isn't even a weapon so no foul ?

5) Do you ever pull anyone over for driving the speed limit? I was coming out of Ocean City on Rt 50 and was doin the posted speed of 55 since Ocean City cops suck. And I see this OC cop roll up behind me. So I put my cruise contol on 55 and keep driving. HE PULLS ME OVER! Apparently I was "impeading the flow of traffic" by doing the speed limit in a left hand lane. So he gives me a warning for "Failure to obey traffic control device" (SIGN : Slower Traffic Keep Right). Now me again being the smart ___ I go goes "What speed would you like me to do officer?" He was like um the speed limit. I was like Cause I know yaw got radar traps set up up and down this road. He was like accually they are laser, but yea.. I dont get what your asking. I was like nevermind officer and drive off.

What kinda BS is that.

I got some funny cop stories from me being smart to them explainin myself and driving off with nothing. :twisted:

14-218(a) Traveling to fast (Infraction)
1mph to 23 mph over the speed limit (fine ranges from $78.00 to $166.00)

If speed is in excess of 56 mph on a state road then it will turn into 14-219(b) Speeding (Higher fines).

If speed exceeds 85 mph then a Summons on a 14-222(a)Reckless Endangerment charge will be issued (State road or HighWay).

By itself these violations do not require Custody.

If you feel that you were doing the speed limit then by all means challenge the ticket.

When you go see the Magistrate stick to your guns and be firm on the fact that you were doing the speed limit. Be firm but polite and respectfull plus don't start complaining about the cop. The Magistrate may get defensive and just reject your claim.

Be ready to tell the Magistrate that your willing to take it to Court. Try to articulate "where, when, and how" of your incident.

Chances are that the Magistrate may offer you a reduced fine with no points for example. It's up to oyu to choose the option. I my self be glad to take it.

The other option for the Magistrate is to void the ticket outright. You see it will cost the city more money to take it to Court (Hence the Magistrate forum) than to simply void the ticket. The reduced amount is usually offered first. Thats where your rolling the dice.

You can help yourself by going well dressed to see the Magistrate and be very proffesional. Show them that your a respectable person. If your driving history is clean let them know too.

Avoid getting emotional and don't vent about anything. Just simply explain your situation and seee what happens.

By order of Xbox2 I had to skip you. Now I'll get your first question.

What your doing in that scenario is called dragging. We are trained to recognized this. Dragging is only a false sense of security since a Cop / Trooper utilizing Lidar can pinpoint read your speed and that of any vehicle in front or in back of you.

On the Highway I have seen Troopers use the Gunner n Chaser detail. One Trooper is the Gunner (Lidar operator) while two or more cruisers are the chasers. I have seen them have 5+ vehicles lined up on the side of the road ready to receive disposition.

Trust any trick you can think of has been thought of already and most likely we have a counter move for it.

Most of that was bull____ but then again I can imagine that you guys demanded some attention. You said that 3 breathalizers were given. Well were all three of you driving because thats the only reason a breathalizer is used for D.U.I. There is really no point in giving anybody else a breathalizer unless they were looking to send you guys to the hospital but then again you dont need a breathalizer for that.

If they actually waited for you guys to get in your cars turn the cars on and start moving to then stop you, all I got to say is that they were looking to bust ***** and abuse Police powers. That ____ boils me. Probably the Cop who said knock it off was either a supervisor or senior Officer who knew better and put an end to the nonesense.

Im glad I dont work in a Town where I have the time to sit and wait for teenagers to get in there cars to then pull them over to flash my badge. Total Bull____.

I say learn your rights and enforce your rights. Trust me if you start taking names and badge numbers they will change there tune or atleast knock the crap off.
