I must say this has been the most interesting thread I have ever seen on the internet. You are to be commended ScionCop! It really is a great service to these young guys, keep it up.
Hope you get your TC soon, its a really fun car.
I wish you could come out here and teach these Portland Cops how to be cool to citizens. Seems to be a high volume of jerks in our force.

Thanks you for your compliment.
I always say don't be fooled by the illusions placed before you by TV, Media and hearsay. Treat everybody you mee for the first time as a neautral with no bias or pre-judgements. You just may be surprised.

Howdy scioncop!
Long time lurker, first time poster, on your thread anyways...
Question for you on "unusual" security systems. I know you can't really answer this for California but what would be the standard for allowing an "unusual" security system? Legally I mean...
For example;
The electrocuting car alarm (i.e. in the Robocop movie) is illegal because it's... a booby trap?
The flamethrower attachment (from South Africa where car jacking is as common as jaywalking, or so I hear) is probably illegal because of it's possible harm to bystander's or something.
The Detroit jockstrap (from the Naked Gun movies) was a crotch grabbing arm that could come out from under the car and give a carjacker a lot of trouble with the family jewels, is, technically impossible but still illegal because.....why?
Electrified door handles are illegal cause someone just brushing against the car could get shocked?
How about a contraption that shoots pepper spray or dye if it detects unauthorized access inside the car? or hell, outside the car...
Or this one security thing I heard about - a device that emits a non-toxic mist inside the car when thieves are detected. just to freak them out.
I'm just trying to figure where a judge, lawyer, or cop would draw the line because the thought of car thieves making off with my baby (SSM tc) fills me with the burning rage of a thousand fiery suns.

All the mentioned booby traps are illegal. Funny though. You could actualy be charged with manslaughter by implementing those devices in your TC.
I love my car too but I say the hell with it. If they steal it I don't want to see it again. Thats why I don't buy Low-Jack or an alarm system.
I rather have my insurance company get me a new car rather than the police finding my car half choped up or ran to the ground.

i have an unusual question is it illegal to keep handcuffs in your car if they are not real, like the ones that dont have a key hole andif someone is locked in them there is a lever on the side that releases them, even the person wearing them can release them. it would be impossible to keep someone in them. ive been wondering because there has been things on the news about people pretending to be cops and pulling people over and stuff so idk if cops would be ____ed about those.
thanks.......wish more cops were understanding like you seem to be

I don't see how having quimick cuffs would ____ off a Cop. They aren't illegal. Even possession of real cuffs are legal. It's what you do with them as an act that might get you in a jam.
Example. If you have the cuffs on your belt line and lets say you lifted up your shirt showing the cuffs to someone saying your going to arrest them or that your the "Law" then you can get into a jam.
If you have real cuffs and lock someone up against their will then you can also be in a jam. Unless of course your living in a State that can effect a citizens arrest and the circumstances you fall under can substantiate such detention.
Just possession of the cuffs are not illegal. Many non-certified enforcement officers like security gaurds carry cuffs.
Impersonating a Cop is a totally different matter in itself.

how would one go about finding out which states allow for a citizens arrest?
<edited below>
from what i am reading, i'm seeing it as being a federal law, read differently in different states (i.e. in MA, you can be sued for false imprisonment, in kentucky lethal force is allowed during citizens arrest, and no lethal force in utah)

i think, macmaster, from reading the thread earlier, that any red/blue light seen from outside of your car is illegal if (it's moving). So floor lights are kosher, string/dome lights aren't if they are visible from outside.
is there a site like ticketassassin.com for MA? (i haven't gotten a ticket, this is just in case)
I know of tipmra.com (armpit backwards) but that requires money as well. I'm mostly wondering if you could fight a ticket via the mail in MA, like you can in CA.
Thanks

Hey Scioncop,
Just joined and just read this thread beginning to end, great information!
I am curious, what kind of police vehicle do you drive, Crown Vic, Impala or "other"? What's your opinion of the CVs?
My current vehicle is a '97 police package CV which used to be a city police car... at this point it is pretty tired but it still accelerates and handles well. It would probably make a nice taxi if it weren't so rusted out. Can't wait to get my Scion...

Just to add another question to the mix
I'm pretty sure it's illegal to drive with only one headlight, right? But how do so many people get away with this? I see so many people on the road with one light (and sometimes multiple times) that I wonder if they're just ignoring repair orders or what...

I'm no cop but it could be that the cops haven't caught up to them yet. Cops do do other things like stop and catch small time thieves, respond to domestic dusturbance calls, block off and contain collision sites and stop at Starbucks to consume coffee and scones.
Whats up people!!!!! You guys left me alone for a while now I get hit up with back to back posts. Well I'm here to serve my Scion peeps........
Going back several posts.....
I drive a Supercharged Crown Vic.
Blue or Red lights seen from outside of the vehicle are illegal in Ct.
One Head light vehicles are more than a dime a dozen. We stop them but it's such an overwhelming problem that never gets caught up with.
Nice to hear from you guys and gals.

Wow, what a thread. We just got a cop in our car group, with a tC. His name is Norman. Nice guy.
Now, here is a old question, but I was wondering...I have to drive up to VA from FLA, and my windows are tinted...20% I think. You can still see in fine. I drive an xB, and the rear was factory tinted; I did the front doors .
The front window is tinted, you know, with a dark strip across the top. The rest of the window got tinted with a special tint that cuts out UV and allows you to be seen fine.
I guess, what I am wondering is, if I'm out of state, can a cop pull me over JUST for the tinting? And then, can they make me take it off? Or since I have FLA tags, am I allowed to leave it on?
Help me ScionCop Ka Nobi; you're my only help.

From what i understand you are under the registereds state MV Law. If you get a ticket contest it and let them know what state your in.
Remeber to answer your ticket by either pleading guilty and paying or not guilty and contest it. Not responding to the ticket will result in an Arrest Warrant for "Failure to respond to MV Infraction ticket"

Hey Eddie, is it true that if you ask an undercover officer if he/she's an officer and he/she says no, then they can't arrest you? I've also heard a variation to where if you ask 3 times and he/she says no, then they can't arrest you. Any truth to this?!
Dentyr..... Nice to chat with you again.
Total False. Undercover is Undercover. Where not playing hide and seek.
There is some legality when officers must identify themselves. Example when making an apprehension or entering a dwelling.
Officers must identify themselves in those types of situations because a person is being expected to comply to the authority. Another "rule of thumb" is when weapons come out badges come out.
