Default Modded exhaust in Ma

ok so my car is up for inspection and i was just told that it's illegal to have any mods to your exhaust. is there any truth to this? my exhaust has been modded since 06. and i don't see why it's all of a sudden not allowed.

If you've had it on there for a while I wouldn't worry about it. You live in MA not CA...

Only thing you might have to worry about passing is a smog test or something - but as long as all of your Cats are still in place, you should be fine.

ok so i took it down there and they passed it.......... bairly. the new laws in MA are:
NO modded exhaust at all(if it does not look oem, automatic FAIL)
NO more then a 2in rise or drop in suspention.
No painted, smoked or covered tails in any way.
NO lisence plate frames or clear covers.

I got lucky and struck a deal with the guy, but all the harley riders with straight pipes, their gonna fail them. it's kinda messed up that you can sit there and work on your car for years and then all of a sudden they make a law that forces you to go out and posibly spend 2 grand getting things returned to oem or to comply with them.

So stupid. I hate dumb laws like these. So what if your exhaust falls off or gets a whole in it? You can't fix it or replace it? They make the laws written so stupidly. And what allows a car manufacturer to produce tail lights to specs? Just because it is factory means it is 100% legal? Stupid.

I dont know if these are entirely accurate. how can an exhaust "look modded"? even a modded exhaust looks like a stock piece and vice versa. Mass is going a bit overboard with some of this ____. My guess is, take your ride to a smaller town to get inspected, like somewhere in western mass, or anywhere outside boston suburbs and you should be fine.

whats funny is that all of these laws have been in effect for as long as I can remember... cops just didnt care about them back then. After the whole thing with all those cops who got busted for profiling, was when all of them started to care about these laws and started coming down on inspection stations... hmmmmm.... I wonder why they care about it now....

No modded exhausts in MA period? Does that mean that all of the muffler shops suddenly went out of business?
