I need new brakes...
...and my dealer wants $299.99 +tax (wowz)
I'm not very mechanically inclined. I'd be afraid something bad might happen if I DIY.
How much would you guys say a mom-n-pop or 'franchise' shop would/should run for brake pad replacement for just the fronts? I'm at under 30%. And is it important to know what brand they using? i.e., are there generics to worry about?
I'll make some calls for quotes, but wanted too see if ya'll had any input.
Thanks,
Sw

Places like Pep Boys and Midas offer free pad replacement to the person who purchased the original brake-job (you have to show your receipt), but it's for their cheapo replacement pads. The pads don't cost them crap, the labor is where they make all the profit. This is just a way to keep you coming back to them.
Be forewarned though, I used to have a Cadillac that had pads that squealed when it was time to replacement them. I took it to Midas, but they didn't use pads that squealed when they get worn down, so I found out the next time I needed brakes when the fronts went metal-on-metal. Can you say "new rotors"? That was a very expensive set of free brake pads!
You can specify better pads, you just have to pay the difference in price from their freebies.
