Default Mechanic needed (New Engine 04'xA)

Here's the story. Friend xA got caught in a flooded area and ultimately the car stalled. She call a truck got towed and thought maybe letting the car dry out would fix it. It didn't Long version short her insurance company is telling her they want to total the car because she needs a new engine but won't tell her what is wrong. Not only that they have it at a paint and body shop and got their info from them (to the best of my knowledge). I told her she needs to get them to take the car to a mechanics shop and have them look it over and tell them what needs to be fixed.

They told her the engine would be $4900 and they valued her car at $4500. The car was bought from a member of SL here a couple years back. The car is in good condition and even at fair condition blue booked at $6500. She's getting the short end of the stick...

Now to the point. I need to know if it is the engine is it really $4900?? Toyota only wants $4500 to do the job. Is there a cheaper mechanics shop out here that can help? She is in the San Marcos area (Up there semi close to Oceanside, CA). If you can help out with some good information on this for me please let me know what we can do. This car is her only form of transportation.

Hit up Jason Night. scvscions@yahoo.com. He is an ASC Cert Master Mechanic. He is the only guy that has worked on my cars. There are a bunch of guys on here that will vouch for him and his work as a mechanic.

A few phone calls to the right people and they paid off her car plus gave her $2000+ extra. She decided that was the best way to go and is now looking to buy a gen1 xB.
