there is still a tourqe convertor where the clutch should be though. Without being able to feather the clutch, you lose a TON of controll over the car. Plus, we water down the driving experience here in america too much with this flock to "auto-sticks", real manuals are still superior for car control.

I can see an 8 speed auto on say, the LS460, but the IS is supposed to be sort-of a sports car. I really wish I had a 5 speed IS300 from time to time

That car is amazing. I got to sit in it last night for press day at the auto show in detroit, real solid car.

Does the tranny really have a torque converter? Worlds of difference between that slushbox and the SMG in the M5.

Also, while Toyota may sell 3 times as many cars as BMW, BMW remains the *most profitable* automaker in the world. There IS A REASON that people will pay such a premium, and put up with inferior reliability. For those of you that don't understand why, I suggest you go test drive a new BMW. If you still don't get it, then perhaps a professional driving/racing course will help you understand. Or maybe you are just female?

Boil it more for me: it's about the "sport" in sports car. I imagine very very few people hunt with automated guns mounted on jeeps or something. Simple, there'd be no sport in it.

This is the best point made in this thread. As the previous owner of a 2001 330xi 5-speed the BMW blows any Toyota-based vehicle out of the water in balance and poise.

These new semi manuals are worlds better than the predecessors from say an mr2 spyder. I would still take a manual over an auto any day.
On the other hand, I was able to take a GS450H around an autocross course and was suprised at how well it was able to go through the turns, and how well the throttle responded to my inputs. It was much better than the auto IS350 for sure.

My dad has the exact same car, with the sport and performance packages... It really isn't anything to write home about. I perfer my xA's go-cart handling, thats my opinion though.

I don't think it's official until it's actually tested. I don't think toyota would toss out a car that isn't right on the money with the competition.
