July 10 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp.'s Corolla, the world's best-selling small car, will keep its current design for a record sixth year, until 2008, as the automaker focuses on rolling out other new models.

``There was a decision to be made regarding engineering resources,'' John Hanson, a spokesman for Toyota's U.S. unit, said in an interview today. ``We decided to let Corolla go a little longer, mainly because Corolla has been such a huge sales success compared with where we thought it would be at this stage of its life cycle.''

U.S. sales of Corolla sedans and the related Matrix hatchback climbed 13 percent in the first half of 2006 as U.S. gasoline at almost $3 a gallon helped propel demand for compacts such as Corolla and its key competitor, Honda Motor Co.'s Civic.

Toyota cites the redistribution of engineering resources to ensure a smooth launch for the redesigned Camry as the main reason for the delay. Other automotive news outlets are speculating that the real reason is because Honda's new Civic has forced Toyota to go back to the drawing board.

For our part, we believe Toyota. The Honda Civic is currently enjoying a 17.1% increase in sales through the first six months of 2006 and has moved 165,056 units. Despite the Honda's critical success, the Corolla continues to steam roll its competition, including the new Civic, with a 38.7% increase in sales during the first half of the year, selling nearly 200,000 units. Clearly the Corolla can hold its own for one more year, which gives Toyota 365 more days to build a better Civic slayer.

I'm gonna go with Toyota on this one, too.

Despite the new Civic, the Corolla is still kicking its ___.

I bought one for my wife last year, and it has been the best car she has ever owned. Ultra-low maintenance costs, great MPG, and good ride quality.

It's a great small car, almost as boring to drive as a Camry. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The only thing wrong with it are the antiquated head units, but that can always be fixed.

I would have bought one if it could compete with the xB on ease of ingress/egress and "fun factor."

Toyota is absolutely right to retain an excellent, affordable car that gets such good mileage and has such a great reputation. Say "Corolla" to almost anyone and they reply "great car."

Yeah, I would like to see something a little more exciting... but what smallish-sedan is actually EXCITING? Toyota is playing it smart, and making a car that can appeal worldwide to save costs.

Speaking of moms... my mom bought a Corolla from Capital Toyota in Chattanooga, she swears it's the best car she's ever owned-- can't stop talking about how reliable it's been.
Good job Capital!

Its selling and performing well. No need for a change. Yet, to keep ontop of the competitive market, maybe a new lip or front and rear bumper cover re-design would be suitable for an aging desing?

I don't know about this decision, but what must be done is done. I saw some pics of the '08 and was quite dissapointed. Toyota will surely keep that "play it safe" rep for the little sedan.

Well Toyota needs to do something because if they are going to keep the Corolla bland, and they just axed the solara, and the MR2 and celica, they have no cars that even hint at being sporty or sport like.... I know we've got the tC, but that doesnt count. Toyota has to have something in it's line up too! Repeat after me... Bring back the SUPRA!

I have to say that's a dumb move on Toyotas part. With other automakers coming out with fresh, sleeker looking cars, people are going to buy those instead of something that's been around for a long time. Sales will eventually decline.

Also. let's hope the next Corrolla is better looking than the concept one.

Toyota sells boring cars because people want boring cars.

Face it, if people didn't want Toyota's boring cars, their sales would be terrible.

But guess what, Toyota continues to sell their boring cars. No matter how boring the Corolla maybe, it will continue to sell.

All Honda can do is to "try" to make their Civic look "interesting". But you know what... car buyers will continue to buy the Corolla.

The name Corolla has made such a phenomenal record for itself. Corolla stands for value, reliability, quality and economy.
