And the reason why we would want to look into diesel is because of a diesel's inherent low-end torque capability. Pair that with an electric motor, and you've got some silly-a$$ torque on tap. In addition, diesels have decent economy on their own. Slap a HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive) in there, and you've got a 30mpg Heavy Duty Work truck that will tow 10,000 lbs. Can't lose.

Toyota has been unable to get any kind of hybrid system to work well on pickup - that's why they are going diesel.

....look for the diesel to come from CAT . Toyota has a great diesel , but the marketing of CAT power , on the tailgate .
....the truck is huge : class 1 license good for vehicles under 80" wide . Tundra ; 79.9" wide .
...the Tundra hybrid ; electric engine on each wheel with 6 liter gas ... more torque than cummins or power stroke with great MPG .

TOYOTA WILL ONLY USE THEIR OWN ENGINES!!!

The Toyota brand has been based on solid if uninspired designs that are full of value. As the sun rises and the sun sets a Toyota always runs. Toyota will not allow their reputation to be in the hands of a Cat, Cummins or others when it comes to something as important as the engine and transmission.

With truck customers you do not get a second chance. They will slow grow the truck market like Toyota has done the cars. They will crush the 1500 and 150 series and then slowly build more facilities and add bigger and badder trucks. This is Toyota. Slow, steady, unyielding and unwavering growth. They are like the old horror movie "The Blob" it moves slow but as it eats up it just keeps getting bigger an bigger.

All Hail Toyota!!

Uhhh....that's and interesting theory, but untimately flawed. Yamaha developed most of the engine that resides in our Celica GT-S/Matrix XR-S/Corolla XR-S, so there's that.

We have NO ISSUE licensing technology from companies if we feel it will increase the value of our products. JBL stereos, Sharp Electronics Plasmacluster A/C units, Frachir seat fabric, Vortec Superchargers, etc.

True, we own HINO, but we don't make enough diesels that the name alone would sell it. CAT is a hell of a name, and certainly would ring as true as Cummins or Banks or Detroit Diesel.

And don't count on Toyota eliminating the F150 anytime soon. Ford knows where it's bread is buttered, and even if every other model in their line up is cancelled, they'll continue to build trucks. And decent ones at that.

I wouldn't say that Toyota will cause the demise of the F-150, but it will sure put a hurting on GM and FMC with the release and expansion of the new Tundra. I don't think it matters where our diesel ultimately comes from. Based on Toyota's record it will have more HP, more Torque, higher towing, be quieter and be more reliable than either a Duramax or a Powerstroke.

I've worked for Toyota for 15 years and I have literally heard thousands of times that the customer is buying this Corolla/Camry/Avalon for their Son/Wife/Daughter, but that they need a "truck" for work. They always asked when Toyota was going to build a "real" truck. They hated the fact that they had to go Ford or Dodge for their trucks. I'm talking 3/4 and 1 ton stuff. I think this Tundra has a chance to revolutionize the truck industry. I guess half of it depends on the truck and the other half on the public. Only time will tell.

The reason why you dont see a diesel hybrid system is because with toyota, our hybrids use a very low compression engine so that the electric generator can start the car effortlessly whenever it needs to. a standard gasoline engine has to high of compression and needs an actual starter to fire it up.

As for who will make the Diesel Engine? Smart money is on CAT. They're already a sponsor for the 07 NASCAR Camry. We have them on board right now. We just need to get it to the people.

Tundra being a "real" truck? 2007 model puts that issue to bed once and for all. This truck is monsterous. It is as wide as legally possible to be considered a non-industrial vehicle. The A-cab model is 11" LONGER than the current model. its a few inches deeper in the bed and has a tow capacity of roughly 10,000 lbs. Ford has to go to a superduty to achieve those numbers. I think the Toyota Juggernaut is on its way to annihilating the competition. Its got the Financial backing, the public support, and the resources to do pretty much whatever it damn well pleases! Big 3, watch your back!

Toyota will have a diesel p/u in the US by 2009. The powerplant is already in the works. That much is fact. If I were to bet the farm, I would bet that it will be a Toyota bred engine. I would also bet that it will be developed from scratch specifically for the US market.

Whether the Hybrid comes out at the same time as the diesel and whether or not it is gas or diesel is still a mystery to me.

Yes, the Tundra will be gianormous. The "access cab" they showed at the most recent auto show is 10" longer than the current access cab it replaces. I can't imagine the size of the double cab right now.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the diesel engine is being developed jointly by Toyota and Aisin. Aisin is one of Toyota's major suppliers.

At this point it's configuration is unknown.....either an I-6 or V8....though most likely a V8. It's excepted to have 300+hp and generate in excess of 650 lb. ft. of torque.
