Haven't gotten any guff from the fuzz yet, but my front plate is mounted on my windshield with suction cups. I think it's within the licence plate regulations (under like 4' and mounted) but it isn't within the regulations for having things on the windshield (you are allowed to use 7" square on passenger side and like 5" square on driver side)

are you sure you don't mean 5/16"? I've been trying to figure out what size to get, but 5/8 just sounds way to big.

why not mount it where the two drilled holes are?????? no point of leaving it there.

i too live in cali and i have not had the front plate on every since i got it almost a year ago. i gotten pulled over not for the plate tho. and the cop didnt mention it. if u look at higher end cars like MBZ and cadillac, some of their models come with whole assemblys that you can use to cover the area where the front plate goes. honestly if i ever get pulled over for it. im going to say that the dealer said i did not have to or somthing like it fell off. front plates are fugly.

I've had my tC since Oct. '04 and I took off the front plate after a month. Disrupts the lines of the car. Here's a quick fix: You know those bookcases you buy at Target for like $20? Just use the screw covers from those, paint them with matched(!) Touch-up paint from the dealer, and super-glue them to the bumper. Most of us have those items laying around the house. No need to pay $25-$30! Strange thing is, the super-glue doesn't damage the factory paint. (Still can't figure out why.) Here's a pic..

So far, no hassles. Since we are to have 2 plates on our cars here in Cali, its the law that the dealer drill the holes in the front bumper. Sux, but can be fixed. I haven't seen it yet, but supposedly there is a license plate frame that mounts to the bottom of the front bumper and is spring-loaded. Giving the appearance of a "floating frame". I'll have to stop by my local Lexus dealer and check those out. Lastly, don't drive like an idiot and bring yourself unwanted attention. That's just asking to be pulled over. Then "The Man" can pinch you for all your "slightly" illegal mods.

the angle brackets sounds like a good idea, except that it will still require drilling holes in the bumper. what size bolts should I get to stand it out from the front grille?

Nope, it doesn't count - infact I think its advertising it even more.
Thing is, in SoCal almost every Other car doesn't have front plates... Ain't such a big deal here, but it is an excuse a cop can give...

Ok, So you go to lowes, or somewhere that sells brackets like these

http://shop.boatingstore.com/images/...S/50-37551.jpg

You have to buy two larger ones and two smaller ones.

And then you also have to buy flat washers and short bolts and nuts which are used to hold the angle brackets in place through our honey comb grill on our Tc's.

You have to try to get a visual of this before purchasing your brackets and washers because your washers have to be larger then the honey comb grill slots, and your bolts cant be to long.

Another thing is, as you can see from my pic, there is some weather strips behind my license plate near the bottom, it because I am a freak at things scratching my car. So I put that just in case, but the plate should actually not touch your car.

Its clean and simple. Maybe I should have been a license plate angle bracket creater/installer/ something, but i am lazy

But here is a pic of what a flat washer looks like.
http://www.allproducts.com.tw/manufacture7/pteco/p1.jpg

Just like the angle brackets they come in all sorts of sizes, shapes, and EVEN colors.

But total with alot of extra parts it came out to be like 5 bucks.
