So my cars in the shop, and i wana kill some time, and i have the vvti engine cover siting in my garage, so i wanted to do somthing to it, i was thinking ... painting it. How do you guys gonig about doing that?....Does reg. paint melt?....How did you paint it?

 

Sand, primer, paint.

Use high temp engine paint. Most auto stores carry it. But why paint? Go powdercoat it!! Or is the cover plastic?(dont own a tC yet, so I dont know, )

Just clean it really good with mineral solution or rubbing alcohol. No need to sand and primer. Use a High-Temp paint (Dupli-Color for instance) and a clear coat. 3-4 coats of each and rock on...

You could do this project in less than 30mins.

 

That looks so clean it could be factory. At some point I might even sell my CF engine cover, and go for the painted look.

Will the clear coat take the high temps?

 

I might have to redo mine. Clearcoat would look great on it. I actually just cleaned it off and sprayed it with Krylon. It's not high-heat but it's lasted a long time, with no chipping, peeling, or cracking. I've taken some long distance trips too.

 

How did you do your lettering?

 

Actually instead of using Primer on the plastic... I recommend using Adhesion Promoter.

 

I cheated! It's a vinyl sticker. A guy named Randode who frequents this site can hook you up with the sticker for like $6.

As for the clear coat taking high temps; I haven't had a single issue and my Engine Cover has been painted/cleared for over 4 months now. It looks the same now as it did on day 1 of this mod.

 

Would regular automotive paint (stuff you'd use to repaint your car) stick to the p[lastic, or would you have to use any special primers or anything?

 

auto paint works just fine. That's how i got mine painted to match my nautical blue exterior color.

 

I like it, I was thinking about doing mine in red.....

I painted mine a year ago. 2 steps

1.Clean really well
2.Paint with Krylon fusion for plastics.

Looks as good as the day I did it. I often clean it when I go to the car wash with a little blast of water.

Yeah, i did the cover, fuse box cover and the TRD swaybar all at the same time. The K&N intake came like that
