Question though, how do you remove the dark colored trim pieces in the hatch? Specifically the left & right side panels with the grocery hooks, and the rear hatch panel itself?

I'm looking forward to tackling this on the weekend and putting an end to the rattles!
There's one screw holding the pieces in and you have to pop out the grocery hooks, they're made to snap in and out.

Be careful though, there are plastic clips on the inside that can easily fall off into the nether regions of the car. It also helps if you take out the spare tire cover and the foam thing holding the jack.

Oh, almost forgot, you have to remove the lower hook anchor with a 10mm socket or end wrench.

If you're not mechnically inclined be careful, there be demons there. and you might not be able to get things back together just right.

Absolutely NO rattles on my commute to work this morning. All I hear is the road noise.

Also of note, my car has the 18" rims with the 40 aspect ratio tires so bumps and such get transmitted into the car a degree more than the stockers since i have less sidewall to absorb the imperfections in the roads.

/me longs for roads like the Autobahn, which I have had the pleasure of driving on. It's funny, at the Munich airport when I went to pick up my rental car from Avis, I was expecting something low end like a golf or something, nope, their intermediate car (lot's of traveling = lots of freebies) was a 3 series BMW.

Over there the 3 series is like the ford tarus of here, they're everywhere.

My recent trip to Italy found myself in a benz almost every day, must be nice to have basic cars be BMW and Mercedes.

How did you like Munich, it is on my list of travel vacations and am planning to group it with Vienna and Prague?

Also, were would I go to get the foam tape or what ever it is you used? at a home store (home depot) or an auto store (pep boys)?? I am having the same problem and would like to fix it.

by the way, YOU ROCK for providing details description and photos not to mention your deep obsession in finding the rattles. Wish Scion was as deticated as you and issue a TSB for this.

Thanks Again

Loved Munich, absolutely loved it. Been there during Octoberfest and when it was not going on, both times I had a wonderful time. Took several tours to see the castles including the infamous Newschweinstein (spelling might not be correct, it's the one built into a mountain). Also drove into Salzsburg to see a Motzart concert, again awesome. The Haufbrau house is a popular tourist attraction and is touristy but, it's fun. Personally as a beer fan I found a little place called the house of 101 beers and had a wonderful evening.

Also you can't miss this place. It's got everything, beer, hostory, tours, a beergarten, what more can you ask for, oh and good food.

I got the felt stuff at Ace Hardware but, I imagine Home Depot would have it too but, you'd most likely have to do a bunch of searching.

Thanks, I will have to stop at home depot on the way home and see if I can find it. I will probably start with the latch and see it that works before I go taking everything apart. May also try the foam on the stops too while I am at it. Did you take have to take the plastic piece off to get the tape on the latch hook thingy?

Sound like Munich was a blast, can't wait to go even though it would be for several years...I did Italy this year, London and Paris next followed by Greece...Spain...and then Munich, Vienna and Prague. How was the language there, do enough people know some english, I found Italy to be much easier than I thought it would be and many people spoke english.

Sorry to everyone for getting off topic, I just love Europe. OK, OK...back to our regularly scheduled Scion broadcast.

Nope, no plastic removal to put the felt stuff on the striker for the latch hook. I kinda wish I had started there. But, with all I've done, if I ever decide to put a OMG! HEUGE! stereo in it the rattle work will have already been done. But, I'm not, I've gotten past that phase in my life.

I still have the 67 Bug I bought right after high school with 2 12" subs in a sealed enclosure and boston seperates for the mid and high in the doors and rear side panels. Driving it all is 2 Apline MRVF400 amps, one bridged for the subs and one for the mids and tweets. It uh well, you can hear me coming about a mile away.

Funny aside, I was out driving it the other day (it's got a big engine in it that I built and a custom exhaust so I'm a giveaway that it's modded and tend to attract rice) pics.

Anyways, I was at a light with a poorly modded civic next to me, had to be a lx or dx because the rear brakes were drums. All he had I think was exhaust. Anyways, he had his annoying rap blaring out his car and I just could not stand it so I cranked up my Boston - I need your love to drown him out which I did, without distortion. He tried to crank his up more but I started to hear his woofers distort and bottom out.

So of course since I beat his stereo he must avenge it by revving his engine and induce a race. I check the road conditions and we've got at least 1/2 a mile with no intersections at all and no cars in fron of us so I think why the hell not, the engine needs a good run. Light goes green, he drops the hammer and spins his fronts a bunch. I drop my hammer, front end starts to pull up as usual and the rears stay planted. Had him at the start and never saw him get near me in my rear view.

now for the funny part, I forgot to check BEHIND me at the light. There was a cop back there. Once I got to the the next intersection and stopped (light was red). The Civic pulled up and the driver looked frazzled, then I heard the siren. He pulled us both over so, to the side of the road we go. Cop comes up to me first and tells me to not go anywhere. He spends about 5 minutes ticketing the honda guy and I'm figuring here I am, 29 (30 now) and I'm going to be ticketed for racing and also excessive niose.

Cop comes up to my car and it's clear he's trying to keep a straight face. I say to him, sorry about that but, I could NOT abide by being blasted by his rap music. Cop lost it and was laughing pretty hard. He says to me "I'm not going to ticket you because you can't PAY to see that kind of entertainment! I mean first you douse him with Boston, one of my favorite bands, and then you smoke his stupid ___." I guess the honda driver gave him lip or something. Anyways, I explained to him that I normally would not race like that on a public road but, I succumbed to my temptations, assessed the road ahead, deemed it safe to me and others to race since there were no intersections for 1/2 mile and no cars out ahead. Cop says "Don't worry, at least you assessed the situation, I deal everday with idiots like him who don't and end up wrecking someone. Plus, I'm glad you stopped because even I was having a hard time catching up to you."

He walks back to his car giggling and takes off.

Wow, way off topic and lengthy there. Yes, people I DO have a job!

Boston and no I am not laughing at your music choice but at the story instead. Good Story

I also wanted to thank you. I left work this afternoon and headed home with my hatch rattling all the way...over every little crack in the road, so I decided to stop at Home Depot. There was no foam tape so I grabbed some friction tape which has a little soft padding to it, from the electrical section. Went out and put some around the hatch hook thingy. I then took a short ride on the road I take to work which has two large bumps that always rattle the hell out of my car. And the winner is......

ME with no rattles.

I am not saying it was a 100%, but its about 90% better. I did hear two sounds when I hit large dips in the road but those where really bad and really shook my whole car. Even with that, its still was not that loud and I probably would not even hear it if I was not driving around with my radio off and my windows up listening for every sound. I think that noise is probably either just the tools/spare in the hatch or the wiring you fixed. Either way it was not bad and I can live with that.

Ok, one problem fixed....now on to the sunroof creaking.

Thank again, hopfully the rattle won't come back

It's not back this morning for me. I showed this post to my service advisor at the dealership and he was somewhat amazed at the length I went to in order to isolate it. He wanted to give me some parts for free but I've got everything I want on it on it so I said nah, don't worry about it, just wanted to let you know what solved it.

He ended up crediting me the cost of one of the rims I curbed last week.

And the story would have been even more funny if I happened to have one of my Journey CDs in the car at the time. Blasting Steve hitting the highs on Faithfully would have been truely comical. "Hey civic guy, this is what trebble sounds like!"

Well, I had to take a little of the tape off last night because I was having trouble getting the hatch to open and this morning it started rattling again but still no where near as bad as it was....it was about 70% better.

So today I stopped on my lunch break and pick up some foam tape and applied it to the bumper stops (or whatever they are called) on each side of the hatch. This along with the padding on the latch seemed to do the trick (no rattles yet) but I will have to wait and see.

I had that rattle with the seatbelt. Took me awhile to figure it out.

My hatchback rattle is coming from the passenger side. What mide be causing that? I tried the foam idea and that was a failure

The rattle is back, I tried putting the felt stuff on the "stoppers" on either side of the hatch but to no avail. I'm about out of ideas and getting fed up.

I did notice that the passenger side upper cargo net hook is loose in it's holder so I've removed it and I'll see if that was the source of the rattle. The drivers side one is tight. It makes sense too since that panel and that hook had to be removed to install the factory sub.

On one hand I'm glad I've tried to isolate and fix it myself because if it were the dealer doing it I'd either be out of one of my cars for awhile and/or constantly harassing that the rattle is not fixed when they say it is.

On the other hand I might not be so frustrated if I just let the dealer handle it but, I'd most likely be a different kind of frusterated.

Thread,

Thanks for the help on this one. It is rather frustrating as the rattle appears to go away and then viola, it is back. Not sure why a rattle would come and go. Once the weather gets better in VA, I want to check out the back better. I have tried tape where the hatch connects to the body, foam tape on rubber stoppers, investigated the spare tire area, etc.

Well, the cargo hook on the passenger side wasan't it. So I took it to the dealer since the rattle was there and sure as hell when we go on the drive it's not rattling. Probably because the tech was in the back seat. I heard it really faintly though and so did he and I explained that's what it sounds like only louder. I don't expect the car to be lexus quiet but, we all know how annoying the rattle is.

I told them all the troubleshooting I've done already and even showed them the pics from this thread. They were well, impressed at the lengths I've gone to isolate this rattle. They didn't even hint at well you voided your warranty that covers these parts because you futzed with them. I guess that's because they know I'm a former ASE certified mechanic and so I have some clue as to how to take things apart and put them back together again.

Anyways, the faint rattle the tech heard while riding in the back seat he feels is coming from the c pillar cover above where the seatbelt goes behind the trim. He'd hear a faint rattle, apply pressure to the trim piece and it would go away. So they're going to have a look see on Friday to see what is going on behind it.

I'm also starting to wonder if it's related to how hard you close the hatch. Before going for our ride the service manager opened the hatch and closed it softer than I usually do so maybe that's something in my case. Who knows, I'll find out on my way home from work.

Were they able to find the proplem on Friday? Just wondering since my hatch rattle came back this morning.

Everyone might also want to read this post as it talks about the hatch rattle problem being a WELDING problem. Yeah, will be nice to hear what THREAD found out from the dealer.

Now, if it is a welding problem, is it something a dealership can fix and re-weld or are we basically $hit out of luck?

I udated that thread first but, I didn't take it into the dealership on Friday as the sound was not happening and has not happened since.

I just today saw the post about the weld. That could explain a great many things. If the rattle comes back I'll have to investigate. But, I'm not going to tear everything back down. Leave well enough alone and all that.

Plus I did a fair amount of banging and knocking around with it torn down and and could not reproduce it, I even flexed the hatch a fair amount.

Not seeing where the weld is I can't say for sure how bad it may or may not be. If it's just a tack weld it's not a big deal and could be handled by the felt stuff but, it's a structural weld well, that's going to be nasty and most likely require a repaint.

If it's structural or even a tack weld your typical Toyota service center won't be able to fix it, they'll have to farm it out to a body shop.

I still think it is weird that the rattle is better some days than others. If it was a welding issue, wouldn't the rattle be the same or get worse??

Like I said before, all of us just need to complain to SCION at 1-866-70-SCION or send e-mail to Scion. Then maybe a TSB will be issued or at least a fix.

Metal expands and contracts with temperature. For me I notieced it got more pronounced when the wather was warm. If it were the welding issue then I'd have to say the heat caused the two pieces of sheet metal to expand to the point where they could tap against each other.
