Default underglow wiring question

so i don't know if anyone has done this or not, but is there any way that i can wire up an underglow to light up when i want it to by switch, and also light up whenever i unlock and lock my car doors?

my friend gave me the idea for the lighting up when unlocking and locking my doors so i figured i would wire it to my parking lights or something, but then i still want to be able to turn them on and off so they aren't on when i'm driving.

mhm connect your underglow to to a constant ground and a constant power. Put a switch in line with the wire that is a constant power so you can control it with a switch. Then get out a standard 4 or 5 pin automotive relay. Hook pins 85 and 87 to a constant power source. connect pin 30 to the positive wire of the underglow AFTER the switch, and connect pin 86 to the blue wire under the dash that supplies a ground when the doors are open. Theres a thread around here that shows which wire im talking about. Do a search you should be able to find it.

thanks batman! butttttttttttt i don't really have any idea what that meant. I've wired up things outside of automotive, and that pin 85 and 84 stuff kinda lost me

Here this diagram should help you. To find that blue wire in the picture, just go to the left of where your fog light switch and blank plates are, and pull that little panel off. That will give you access to the wire you need.

Everything else, you should be able to understand from the diagram.

nice diagrams man. However i believe that to acheive what he wants the wire coming off of pin 30 should be attached the the underglow's 12v wire on the other side of the switch...

x Batman x are you sure? If you stick the wire coming off of pin 30 on the OTHER side of the switch, woouldn't their be no power going to the underglow itself if the switch is turned off? Since the underglow powerbox is the Input voltage and your constant 12v is the output voltage,

So then it would only work if the switch was turned on, but then they would stay on regardless if the door was opened or closed?

I'm just trying to double check. Could use a little discussion on this lol.

let me know what you think.

look at your diagram again. If the switch is open (off position) and you opened the door, power wouldnt be able to reach the underglow control box.

if you put the wire on the other side of the switch then the control box would receive power if you either close the switch or open the door.

yes, that is correct. Good Point bud. Yeah run the wire from pin 30 to the OTHER side of the switch, just like x Batman X said.

Good thinking man!!

ah i see.

well if your looking for cheap but quality kits check out: http://tweakedice.com/underglow.html

I get all my lighting for Oznium.com but if i was going to buy underglow I'd get it from tweaked ice because they have much better prices. Plus i used one of their kits in my last car and can vouch that it is decent quality. The only problem i had was that the plastic hangers/brackets broke but if you get some metal components from home depot you would be set.

so i've done everything except the electrical... was just going to make it only go on when i said to no door lock or anything, but then it was 11 pm and i had to do some homework so i stopped.

everything else... putting the wire through the firewall and all that can wait for now.

But quick question, the "switch" is built into the power box for the underglow, so will that make a difference?

well i know this is kind of a necro post on my own thread, but i just wanted to say thank you for those that helped. i finally finished it all up and it works exactly how i want it to!!

eric

edit. i take it back, i did something wrong, and still only works the way i had it before, and i think i blew the fuse in it or something because it doesn't work at all right now i turned on my car and it made a buzzing noise when i turned it on and i have no idea what it was or where it came from ><
