wiring turn signals to a switch
Think it's possible?
I recently swapped out my mirror turn signal LED's for blue ones. I absolutely love them but I was just getting to think: they're very bright and I do not want to turn them on sitting right next to a cop. I know it sounds stupid, but knowing my luck, the cop would actually do something about it, if I decide to turn with them on. So I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts about it.
thanks!

yea, I actually just thought of that. I like the brightness myself, It's jsut the whole being blue thing while turning next to a cop. I was thinking.. hmm: is it worse to not signal a turn next to a cop or is it worse to signal illegally. it made me wonder.
but I was just thinking of a switch that if I flicked it, it would cut power to the mirrors, so only my amber ones up front would blink

I think it would take a bit of custom wiring and some serious research into that wiring... and it would suck if you end up having to have one switch for each side... that would be another thing you might have to consider.
If you simply test the wires on each one to see which is common (one side will most likely always be connected to either power or ground), then you could easilly extend those wires back to a switch. If there is a common connection, you can use one SPST switch to control that connection for both (for example, if the lights are both always connected to power, but the ground is switched, you can run the power to both from one SPST switch).
If they do not have common connections then rather than running two switches you would just use one DPST switch.

I giggled when I read the title of this thread, mainly because the turn signal already is connected to a switch, silly!
But in all seriousness, you should be able to find a common wire from the turn signal on the steering column that splits to the mirror signals that you can cut and extend to another switch.

i dont get it.....
you want to rewire the mirror turn signals for not to use them? uhm.... what if you dont use the turn signal at all around the cops?
down here in florida almost nobody uses the turn signal.. or if they do they will do it wrong..... they put the signal to the left and they make a right turn:D

just get a two-way switch that can switch on/off two sep circuits(4 prongs?), and find each sides pos. lead and run the wires to the switch......more work, but less complicated....hardest part would be easily getting to and known what door wire is the mirrors..
..umm..not sure...but if you are just going to add a simple switch, then it will not matter which side you put the switch on.
...i would just find a wiring diagram for the car..and find the correct color wire in the bundle going to the doors...should be colored coded somewhat and once you get a good guess, take a multimeter and see if it pulses when the turn signals are on.....then get some extra wire adn extend the wires to the switch...

It does matter if you wanted to use a SPST switch to control the common to both. If you want to use a DPST switch then it doesnt matter. But, so you know, the side of an led that has a notched corner, chamfered corner, etc is normally the cathode (negative side).
And to clarify, the switch Daniel was trying to describe above is a DPST switch (double pole, single throw) and is how you would describe it if you were looking for one.

oh well, I guess with the DPST it wont matter.
thanks again, I'll figure something out
