Default 5th gear shift

Does anyone else feel a shake in the shifter when you put it in to 5th? This would be my first manual tranny so maybe I am overreacting, it just feels really weird when I put it in to 5th and it shakes, like vibrating really quickly.

The 5-speed in the tC is known to be tempermental over the years by most of there owners. The best thing you can do for your 5-speed tranny is drain out the stock fluid and replace with Redline MT-90 synthetic oil. Almost everyone who has done this, has seen a great increase in smoothness of the shifts and all around performance! If your still under warranty, I would let the dealer look at it first to make sure there is nothing major wrong, and plus it will be noted in the service records that it was brought in for that complaint if somthing should happen down the road!GL!

I'm assuming that draining/refilling the tran fluid is pretty easy, right? Just as easy as engine oil?

That Redline oil sounds like a great investment...

Trans fluid? I'm not familiar with manuals all that much, but isn't the point that they dont use trans fluid? I thought that was an auto thing...

It doesn't matter what kind of transmission you have. They both have fluid, and if yours doesn't, you would know it!

It is not an easy swap. The tranny fluid is tough to get to. In the tech section is a DIY. I personally would bring it to a local shop and give him the mtl to put in for like $20 or $30.

Here is a link to the DIY article so you don't have to look for it. It's for the tC specifically. Thanks Spectc2K3 for the advice.

did the mt-90 swap a month after buying my tC with the trd sc. the drain and refill is the easiest mt fluid change i have ever done (miata, 96 impala, pathfinder, hardbody, gm 1500). didnt read the tech diy, but get a funnel and a long hose for the fill portion. the ones at autozone, pep boys that have the ~18inch hose with funnel/measuring cup thing is good.

just for anyone curious ... i tossed in the royal purple stuff, simply bc I wanted to get the change done before we took a trip and Redline trannyf luid isn't sold locally yet. I didn't notice any significant change with it and will definately be trying the Redline stuff next time.

The only issue I had with the change was finding a socket big enough, but short enough to fit in the tiny space where the drain plug is.

24mm....pretty sure cuz the diffs on toyota trucks at 24mm and its the same drainplug..its easy one is at the bottom on the side and the front..they both look the same so once you find one look for one that looks the same...its not one of the7 18mm'a that goes directly into the block dont take 2 of those out and hope oil goes in one and out another lol
