Even though this thread is pretty much put to rest, i contacted kevin at twm and asked him where they get their shorter throw from and this was his response.

Hi,

Thank you for your interest in our products. The stage 2 short shifter is shortened above the pivot point by 2.5", and the length below the pivoit point is lengthened as well. This results in a reduced linear throw as well as a reduced angular throw due to the added length below the pivot point.
