Awesome writeup - i'm one of those who actually needed this writeup to do it myself. Thanks scion_shift

Question: "wipe off the mounting plate and then using the new oil, lube the rubber gasket on the new filter, and install: "

Lube the rubber gasket with the new oil? what purpose does that serve? (i know its necessary, but why)?

It just helps it seal quicker.

As far as squall getting that for $7 a bottle and being about the same price.... I will sell you Mobile1 at that all day It is under $5 a quart everywhere I get it! Just giving you a hard time.. but that is still expensive oil :D

$5 a bottle for mobil 1? hmm...

yeah.. it's still pretty expensive... but everywhere i've seen (online even)... redline's stuff costs more than where i get it at that shop. anybody know where else to get it under $7/bottle? hmm.... i usually see it at like $8-9 at auto stores.

i know, i know...

mobil 1 is great too... definitely the best out there for production and great reputation. i just wanted to try the redline... i was on a redline frenzy at the time... went to that shop originally just to get the mt-90.. but when they offered that price.. couldn't resist... :D

Yea the redline at autobacs is around that price or a little more. Walmart has killer deals on mobil1 though so I just go with that.

Great write-up.

What brand oil filter do you recommend?

My car has around 2500 miles on it right now, so its not quite time for the first oil change. When it gets to that point, what oil should I use? I was told the tC comes w/ semi-synthetic in it, and that I should probably stick w/ semi-synthetic. Is there any reason not to go full synthetic? Also, is there really a difference between oil brands (I see talk here about Mobil1 and Redline), or is all of this just hype? Thx in advance.

MRand - you get 3 free oil changes from Scion. I'd go for the 3 free then i'd flush and go full synthetic.

What weight oil do you use on a new xB? I prefer full synthetic brands such as Redline, Royal Purple, & Castrol.

On the pil drain bolt, replace it when you put the bolt back in to fill it up again.

I gotcha...anyone happen to know the size of the oil drain plug? 10 x 1.25 or 12 x 1.25?

Note: I highly recommend a magnetic drain plug to every1 (they're suppose to catch metal shavings from the engine).
