Default Emission Laws

Hey I live in New York and am about to buy a CAI but before I do I want to know if I will be breaking any emission laws. I know in Cali there is a major todo about car emissions but I dont think New York is as restrictive. I googled it and couldnt find any strait answers, just a lot about how other states are thnkin about adopting the CARB laws.

Anyways the only reason I ask is because I want to know if I have to switch my intake before every inspection, it would be a pain but Im willing to do it.

Thanks guys and I hope someone can give me an answer.

I tried searching too bro. All I could find is, states like Mass., Maine, New York, and Vermont have adopted CARB regulations. SO you can bet on removing it before smog inspection in order to pass. Sucks huh?

well thats the thing. I have never had a smog emissions test before. That is unless they do it during the inspection and I never knew about it. I know a guy that works at a local shop and I think I will call him tomorrow.

I just thought it was wierd that I can not find anything on the subject. You would think the DMV would make that information more available.

Still if anyone has any input on this that can help I am all ears. I know there are other SL members from NY and I was hoping that one of them would know. I thought upgading an intake was like one of the first thing people did to their tC's, guess not.

if it adopted the carb thingy, then your intake is definitely a no-no in the eyes of cops. if ny is as strict as cali, the bottom line is, if it's not stock, it's illegal.

So I called the guy I know and he told me some good news. In New York there is basically no intake laws. As long as the intake dosent throw a CEL then the vehical passes inspection. He told me that his shop has passed many cars with CAI. I also talked to my fried who is a state trooper, and he said the only fix-it ticket he has ever heard of in NY was for loud exaust, underglow and cars that were dropped too much. He has never seen another cop give a ticket for an intake in my town or the surrounding area.

So I guess thats good news for me and any other New Yorkers.

You can not pass an inspection if you have removed emissions controls which is necessary for an intake on a tC. At least if the inspection checks the controls.

Not sure about the turbo, but I dont think there are too many restrictions. I could ask though

Don't they do a visual inspection of the emmission control devices?

what emissions control devices does an aftermarket intake remove? nothing, its all there. theres nothing wrong with an intake.

i have my nys inspectors lisence and ive passed dozens of cars with intakes, its not an issue. i believe in cali you may have carb issues if thats what your thinking of.

Well there's the K&N Typhoon short-ram intake 69-8608TFK for 06 & 05 tCs..but who wants that? I hear TRD will realease a CAI for the 08 tC soon (E.O #D-425-21). I have an 07 so I'm carb screwed I guess.

Not really, if the TRD CAI does get CARB exempt then it will fit your 07. 07-08 models are mechanically identical, the only changes are cosmetic, at least thats what Im told.

No emissions around here does a visual check. If you have a CEL they will fail you automatically. My brothers car was throwing a CEL I cleared it for him and told him to drive to get it tested quick before it came back on. He passed fine, right when he left the emission test the CEL came back on, ha. It was pretty funny.
