Intakes
Intakes are basically sound and looks -no real power gains at all. To make then work you need to keep heat away from the intake charge... so you got to wrap and or modify them somehow -There goes the looks. You get to keep the sound I guess. I liked the sound
and the chrome, and it did look cool in the engine bay... eventhough the air going inside wasn't.
The Injen CAI was my first aftermarket purchase for my car. So it holds sentimental value because of it -but that's about it. Now it just sits on top of the dryer in the garage. I might cut it up in parts for an intercooler project -not sure right now.

Well, there is something to be said about looks and sound.. nothing wrong with that as long as you are willing to pay money for it I guess.
Dr.I's "Ghetto fabulous intake" has managed to obtain much lower IAT's at low speeds due to less heatsoak. It also pulls air from lower than a CAI and has the filter in the original place, making hydrolock a little more difficult. You could also find a way to add a bypass pretty easilly. He spent a little over $100 on the whole setup and built it himself. No metal tubes to heat soak.
But again, if you already have one and are dissapointed in the performance, at least enjoy the sound and look of it. An axleback exhaust also does nothing for you but sounds quite nice (At least the TRD does), so it isnt terrible to have a little of that stuff on the car either

As far as the K&N breaking the mounting points.. here is a link with just a few of the others with this issue:

I am glad you dont have the issues, but there is obviously a flaw with these. If you run an engine damper, it will minimize the occurrence of this, but that just shows how poorly designed the part was to start with. They did not take much into account as far as mounting.
And many dont realize it is broken until they really look for it or until the rattles get worse and worse. But, if you dont run into the issue, thats great.
